I have an older DGT. Pretty rugged, as far as I'm concerned - though I'm not 70 (yet).
Chess clock physical abuse

I did some research on the polymer of which the DGT is made (ABS) it's very tough and seems to have the capacity for shocks and all that stuff, what i'm still concerned about is the lever... actually goldendog i probably cant get the chronos, which would have been a perfect solution especially if i could get the one with the touch sensors, no mechanical malfunction there. So does anyone own a DGT 2000 or seen one that has been under similar circumstances for 10 years or more?

Bear in mind it will only need to last for 3 years. The Mayans and Nostradamus would assure you of that. 2012

I have DGT 2010 for few months now. I think you cant go wrong with it. It can probably last 20+ years.

I just bought a Saitek (not the Blue) and am having trouble setting the time, e.g. G/70. It sets it in minutes, but does not show seconds. I'm waiting for a reply from tech support. A tournament opponent had one last week and liked it. I will keep you posted. It seems very durable. Looks as if it can take abuse, e.g. heavy wooden or metal canes, second story windows, being run over by a 1995 Cadillac by a liitle man in a hat.
(Does anyone know how to set this clock?)

I looked at chronosdealer and they offer $15 international shipping. I was expecting a much higher figure. I suppose this makes a Chronos feasible, and a reasonable alternative to the other timers that can be had more locally to Egypt. Customs fees? Ya got me there.

well i suppose the chronos might be a good choice, actually the reason i'm not really considering buying it is that i'm getting lots of stuff from london, someone i know lives there, so i dont have to worry about overpriced shipping costs (chess books and equipment are not what you would describe as abundant here in Egypt, we dont even have public chess clubs, imagine that!!) so i'm getting a wooden chess board, chess set, chess clock about a dozen chess books... I think you get the idea, but it seems that the Chronos isnt a popular choice in england and rarely found in chess stores. Plus i found out that Amazon.com dont ship anything other that books, dvds, cards....etc to egypt... bummer :(
I'm buying a chess set and a clock for OTB games which will probably have to stand the physical abuse of 70 year olds playing blitz games (you can imagine the tension and pressure and the amount of force applied to the set and clock) I was thinking of buying something good, something that will serve me for 20 years or so, which means buying tough durable stuff. I already have a tournament plastic chess set and vinyl board, i'm buying a wooden set for friendly game use at home, which means the issue here is the clock... i'v considered the DGT 2010, I even thought of wooden analog clocks just for the durability, but they're not very practical time-control-wise. Any ideas?
