@dobtom If you buy a set, I hope you will post about it.

dobtom

Ok, I will as soon as it arrives.

dobtom

Boy, it was quick. The moment of truth, that we all love...

I am still in office, so did not have a chance to take better photos, but my first impression is very positive. Chess Empire was great to deal with.

I chose the sheesham version. All the pieces are well made, very nice, quality chess set.

I have not had a chance to see in person an original chavet set, but this set has strange proportions, i.e. the rook is very small, the bishop is very stubby, the queen has a wider base than the king. But I like this set very much, the knights are beautiful.

RichardHG

@dobtom Thanks for posting the photos. The knights are  . . . cute! The sheesham wood looks very good for this set. Good to know that you had a good experience with The Chess Empire.

Let me share one of my favorite videos from the good old analog days. Chavet extravaganza. If you want excitement check from 9 minutes for example. I really enjoy these videos even if the quality is not great obviously.

Great play by Speelman yes, made it possible by Chavet wink.png. That positioning your head to see how much time left, I had to smile big time remembering doing that a lot.

I'm really looking forward to more photos as this chavet design is absolutely in my top 3 favorites, possibly top 1.

Here are a couple pictures of the chess empire set next to the fide wch set. This chavet set is very well made, very well weighted, so playability is perfect, very hard to knock the pieces off. My very small negatives would be the felts are not cut properly on couple pieces, and the lacquer used is too shiny for my taste. You can see from the queen comparison shot, that the cuts are not as sharp as on the wch set (I know the price is much less also). My kids find this set the most beautiful one I have, especially the knight and bishop happy.png

That's a very nice set......Your kid's apparently have very good taste.-happy.png

+1 on the kids lol

Nice set indeed and I can see myself going for the sheesham as well when the buying embargo has lifted 😁

Nice photos and I love this set. I, too, will be picking up a similar set (possibly ebonized) from TCE at a future date to go along with my "mahoganized" SC version.

olegershov

Finally, I got to Germany and revealed a set of white pieces, which TCE immediately sent after my request.

This set of boxwood pieces gives the impression of being freshly made, unlike the previous one. The processing quality is excellent, and none of the earlier problems recurred. There is only one figure with a flaw that I have never seen before. But we will discuss this problem with the Rishi.

I need to say that the pieces are pretty heavy and very comfortable to play with. Most of all, I liked the texture and patterns of rosewood, and I did not regret that I chose it instead of padauk.

I took all the photos in HDR mode to show a wood texture. In real life, the black figures are darker, and the white ones are lighter. So the white balance is more or less correct, and the saturation has not increased.

Chessboard - Walnut Diagonal 50mm from RPF.

And separately - data for those who like to measure and weigh.

Gorgeous. Congrats, @olegershov, it took a long time but it appears well worth the ordeal.

dobtom

Beautiful set and board! I like your rosewood pieces a lot, thx for the pictures.

RichardHG

Beautiful set and your photos are excellent. I especially appreciate that they give me a much better idea of what the knight looks like than I was able to glean from TCE.

Pawnerai

The last vintage Chavet B210 on eBay sold for over $1500 usd. This set is sooooo much better for 80% less. No leaners, and Rosewood to boot! TCE is eating modern Chavet's lunch.

Not that it matters to TCE since they'll steal it anyway, I wonder if Chavet has a copyright on the design. I doubt it.

Great photos of the Knights and grain of the rosewood. The carving on the Kings could be a little cleaner. But overall, VERY NICE. Thanks for taking the time to take pics and posting.

TheOneCalledMichael

+1 great pics. Congratz mister Oleg! The rosewood version is also beautiful! I thought I was set on Sheesham, now I'm doubting again.

@MCH818  On a vintage set, I can accept dings, scrapes, even small cracks and chips. Those are war scars from years of battle. But a leaner? That's just garbage wood. Poor quality materials. Unacceptable, IMO. No way around it.

Huh. I didn't know it was a regular here (Audioq) who got into that bidding war and won the auction. I would've stopped bidding and jacking up the price. Just kidding. Hah! "Excellent as new condition." It doesn't get better than that. Did I miss a forum posting??

***Edit*** Ohwait, I see now that @Audioq closed his account.
