What is the best chess magazine for a improving player- something interesting but not too technical or involved?

NIC, CHESS, CHESS LIFE (all current). A little know chess magazine was issued by Bob Long for 2 years, it was called SQUARES, a quartly magazine. It ranks right up there with NIC and CHESS for sure. In fact I feel it was the best chess magazine ever in print. It ran from 2003 to 2005 I think. If you can get any back issues do so. Chess literature never goes out of date. Bob Long himself maybe has some back issues for sale. He is stil in business and publishes some interesting chess books and periodicals. His email is

I went to my chess library, which is overflowing from my office, and pulled a SQUARES magazine out to once again read it. Just fantastic articles, games, and analysis, also stories you won't get anywhere else.
