Chess on the Blackberry?!?

How strong is chess for Blackberry by Odesys? The free download only  has one level of 8 levels available in the pay version and level 1 is weak!

Try Medieval Kings Chess II.  I wouldn't say that the engine is particularly strong (there are 6 levels), but the game has nice graphics and it works on Blackberries.  You can also play people online, but little glitches here and there make it more annoying than enjoying.  One other gripe I have is that there is no "flip board" feature, so if you play black, you'll be looking at your pieces from white's perspective.

This is the only one I've played and the engine is dissapointingly weak, given the limited processing power available I doubt you'll get too much strength out of a Blackberry but this one seemed particularily docile.

I have just purchased a Blackberry Storm.  None of the Pocket
Fritz programs will work on BB.  I'm really just looking for a BB program that will record over the board games and allow for an export of the pgn to my laptop for analysis and storage in chessbase and chess assistant.  Will the Odeyesys program do this?  I have that currently with my Palm Centro running Open Chess, so I could just keep using that for chess.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Has anybody tried Fritz mobile?  -- I'm especially curious about the Fritz trainers and how well the phones replay the Chessbase videos.

Is there a forum for Pocket Fritz 3 and/or cellphone chess?

I just removed the Odesys program. I do not recommend it.

At first it seemed OK, but ithad two big problems. #1: when I got behind, it was easy to get the computer engine to repeat the same position 3 times and give me a draw. While this helped my ego, it wasn't making me a better player. #2: When I tried to get to FICS (free internet chess server) the software locked up (it would only ask me if I wanted to resign the previous game, but wouldn't actually let me resign).  Even after a cold reboot of the machine it was still locked up. I checked for any software update, but there is none available.

ZBicyclist, you may want to update to the latest version of Odesys Chess. Both problems you mention have been fixed.

Does anyone know if Odesys Chess has the 40 move rule coded? For that matter how about the 3-fold repetition rule? I managed to reach a drawing position with the computer and now we're just shuffling the bishops around Tongue out

Someone asked earlier about the difficulty of odesys chess.

The game claims:

Level 1 - 1200

Level 2 - 1300

Level 3 -1400

Level 4 -1500

Level 5 -1600

Level 6 -1700

Level 7 - 1800

Level 8 - 1900

I don't know how accurate this is because me (about 1400) managed to draw against the level 8 AI. You'd think that with a 500 point gap in our ratings I should have gotten my a$$ handed to me. Maybe I just got lucky

I just downloaded the Odesys free version, and at least on the first level, the engine seems to be really really weak.  Our first four moves, with me playing white were 1. e4 d5 2. exd4 Qxd4 3. Nc3 Qxg2?? 4. Bxg2 e5.

The AI seems to be playing a rare variation of the center game, sacrificing the queen to open white's king-side and get a pawn in the center.  I'm calling it the Odesys Gambit.

I wonder if this will catch on at the higher levels.

But seriously, for people who have purchased the full version, does it get better?

Edit: I should mention one other thing, to be fair to Odesys chess.  The online option for the free version is good, and you can usually find some solid opponents.  This is actually a very nice option if you are looking for something for free (as I always am).

Thanks. I was on 2.2.1 and upgraded to 2.3.4.

honorflamingo: It gets better at higher levels. Better than I am, anyway.

I wish that was more of a compliment. ;)

I also badly want a chess program for blackberry - ideally with strong AI and database and pgn file support. I don't have high hopes but I don't want to have to buy a pda so I just want the strongest game out there for blackberry.

What is confusing is whether software for mobiles actually works on the blackberry. Karlis it's interesting that you have ChessGenius running on a different mobile but can anyone who actually has one of the good programs running on their blackberry let us know what you have.

Buckmaster,

I spent a day researching for same functionality. Looks like blackberry is ages behind Palm w.r.t. chess. When I had my Palm V in 2000, I had a chess program (pocket chess) with database.

I tried SolverLabs Chess (free) and it continually locked up on me, so I uninstalled it.  Are you guys using the Chess.com Blackberry client?  You can play your online games with it, although free members are limited to 3 moves a day.  That's one of the reasons I upgraded my membership, I get unlimited moves now, and can make moves when I'm away from home.  It will probably decrease the quality of my game though, since it's not as easy to do analysis with and you don't have the openings browser.

I just tried newest 1.0.4 version and it doesn't freeze at all.

I've switched to the Palm Pre Plus and the webOS operating system is the equal of the Droid my wife has.  The chess.com app for Palm works quickly and flawlwssly.

I just purchased SolverLabs chess for $0.99 via Blackberry App World. I don't know it's relative strength, maybe an ELO of around 1400 at its highest level?

The developer recently emailed me and told me he's working on a version with FICS. Seems like a nice little chess program.

Better that you got an iPhone and get Shredder for it. The Lite version is free.

Does Android have a strong chess computer for its OS now?

I have the Odesys chess program for the Blackberry. It works pretty well. It does take a lot of time to move at the higher levels however.
