Chess Set Pictures

I recently moved and started a new Chess club in my hometown.  I have been bringing one of my sets each night.  So, I decided to start this topic where we all can post pictures of sets we use and like.

my first offering is The House of Staunton Drueke wood reproduction of the Drueke plastic Players Choice set.  This is the 2.0 model which is better than the 1.0 version in my opinion. It also is a remarkable reproduction of the very popular plastic set.

This set has shown to be very well designed and made so that it plays very well, almost just like the plastic version without the problems.

The light pieces are Boxwood and the dark pieces are their Golden Rosewood.

I think that is one fabulous looking set. I love it.

Yes, thanks.  This set is not in the lower price category but one higher.  The list, base price is $259.00. I personally think this is kind of expensive, but the HoS prices all went higher when they started offering free shipping.

Nice set Eyechess.  I have been on the fence with buying that set for a few weeks now.  The Druek set was not my favorite design.  I even considered it ugly to an extent(mainly the knight and bishop). It has grown on me so much so that I want to own it.  Actually hold the pieces and playing with them put them in a whole new light. I went thru this with the latvian set as well as the ultimate chess set.  I have just recieved the Chessusa reproduction of the players set and have just re-felted them.  Now I may not make it a week before buying a set just like yours.  My main wood board is black and light maple so the boxwood/golden rosewood will be my choice.  Looking at your pictures, the white side boxwood pieces almost look just like the original plastic simulated wood color.

Nice set and thank you for sharing.

Definitely. I noticed how much the white pieces in the picture looked like the plastic, simulated wood.  What would we call that, simulated, simulated wood?  Or maybe wood reproducing the simulated wood? happy

By the way, I also have that ChessUSA plastic reproduction.  It plays and handles like the wood one.  I also like the low price, especially when it’s on sale.

The Drueke design has always been my favorite for "seeing" the position clearly, especially when paired with a green and buff board.  The pieces have an elegant simplicity that is easy on the eyes, with no superfluous details to clutter the position.  I also have always really liked the knight design, and it feels great in the hand.  The horse's neck has a deep narrowing and is the intuitive spot to grab the piece, making it great for speed chess.  Their little magnetic set has the same knight design, so of course I had to get one of those happy.png

It also is the only instance I know of where a high-end wooden set is a copy of an original plastic set.  That shows how highly regarded the design is among a lot of players.  Dang that wooden version is mighty enticing...

Nice set and congrats on starting a new club. Every city and town needs movers to get it done and it's a very generous use of your time to give others joy!

I so wanted to buy the HoS Cooke Luxury set in mopane that @EyeChess reviewed many years back. Unfortunately, it sold out during the QG craze and HoS did not find it worthy to restock. I purchased the SC version which I really really like.

I really like this set as well.

Lovely stuff @Eyechess. I look forward to this thread developing.

I note you encourage people to post pictures of sets people like to use … so forgive my broad use of the term ‘use’ - I do play with this set but so too is it used for display. Yesterday arvo, I was working at my dining table and noted the late afternoon sun hitting the board to my left, through a translucent curtain. It gave the whole set quite an ethereal look.

You know, I am wondering if Staunton Castle was th e wholesaler to HoS for this set, originally.
