These bins are $1 each at Target. They snap shut and the height of 4-7/8" is plenty for all of my chess sets to stand up.
chess set storage

House of Chess seems to have the best prices for wooden hinged chess boxes, all under $63. You can store your pieces standing up, they are felted inside.
I've seen those and they appear to be decent boxes for a reasonable price. I would probably have already ordered one if they were in stock. In the meantime...

The best thing I would add to this is a cardboard divider. It takes time and patience, but if you have a spare shipping box you can make one. It doesn't need to be so tall that it covers the kings because then it's too tall to easily retrieve the pawns. Ask me how I know. Lol

Well, the price is certainly right. Have you used a pistol case or just asking if anyone has?
I have found a variety of really inexpensive, yet quite classy, wooden boxes at various hobby type stores. You may wish to check those out,if you have any in your parts.
Good luck

That's a good idea. I forgot about this one. My Noj set comes with that. I haven't tried to add this to my other sets yet. Maybe the cardboard divider with a plastic box might be the best solution for me. I have a bunch of shipping boxes in my closet waiting to be flattened. Maybe I'll give this a try with my 1849 set.
Noj's box is great. Not sure if they sell those separately. They do sell handmade Slovenian chest. Seems nice in the photos but haven't taken the plunge.

I think Pawnerai is onto something. Check out this. I measured and it fits my 4.6 king set. I just don't know what all that foam does to your wood pieces. Maybe nothing. I don't know.

48X9X4 in. Fits my large set. $148. Beats $219. It has a layer of customizable foam so you can create your own shapes. You can also run over it with your truck without damaging the set and throw it in a lake without getting the set wet. How cool is that.
I have to admit I don't care for the plastic tackle boxes. They don't have the class that a really nice chess set deserves....This is only my personal taste.

@magictwanger - That's a great point. It's one of the reasons why I use them primarily for storage and remove them off the table as soon as the pieces are out. You said you found "a variety of really inexpensive, yet quite classy, wooden boxes at various hobby type stores." Could you be more specific? Local hobby stores in my area have only plastic cases like this:

I'll probably go with this one after I get my second set. I have so little room so I can't leave more than one set displayed at a time. This has multiple layers so you can customize for the individual pieces. Still a bit pricey at $120.
Zagryan,to answer your question regarding what stores I have found very nice, inexpensive wooden boxes.....It is a store in my area(New Jersey) called....Home Goods.
It's a hit and miss proposition, because the inventory moves so fast, you have to be in a store at the right time.
I have also splurged for some rather pricey coffers and also some of the nice wooden boxes from the "Pleasant Time Industries" site.
Good luck

@magictwanger - Thank you for the clarification. Although New Jersey is a bit of a drive from where I live :-) some searching online tells me Home Goods looks like a home furnishing store in the likes of Ikea and Home Depot. Guess I got confused by the word "hobby" and incorrectly assumed you were referring to hobby stores that cater to scale modelers.
Storage boxes from Pleasant Time Industries look great. In fact, they're the company behind House of Chess.
@MCH818 and @magictwanger - I sure would like to find some nice presentable wooden boxes spacious enough to accommodate extra queens and have all the pieces standing without having to pile them up. Let me know if you find one.
It would be really easy to felt the boxes yourself. I got some sticky backed velvet type material for my draught pieces as I didnt want them to scratch my chess board. Worked really well. I got them from Amazon.
