A set somewhat similar to my own, from a 1967 black and white movie Szach i Mat!

Texas Rising series on the History Channel every episode has Sam Houston playing chess. This last episode had a rather close up of the set. This is before the days of the 1849 Staunton set.
Was it a Mexican set?
It looked like something this, at least the knight did. takes place 1836-1837. http://www.chessbazaar.com/reproduced-antique-series-regence-chess-pieces-in-stained-black-box-wood-4-3-king.html

French, then? Thanks for posting this, Mike! I've missed your commentary!
hey what movie is snapshot 2 from? I always see that on american dad and want to watch it
It's a scene from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957), with Max Von Sydow as the knight and Bengt Ekerot as Death.
Here's a couple more scenes from the movie with a better view of the chess set.

Sean Nelson and Samuel L. Jackson in "Fresh" (1994) directed by Boaz Yakin, scored by Stewart Copeland from the band "The Police".

Since there is so much talk about New Orleans in the series I would guess it would be French. Almsot without fail though they show at least twice per episode Sam Houston sitting behind the chess board.
Many of his officers under him wanted to attack Santa Anna at all cost where Houston kept retreating and regrouping till he felt the time was right. Maybe they are infering he got his patience and learning strategy from the game.

SAY "what" again! I dare you! I double-dare you, motherf***er! Say "what" one more godd*** time!
Sorry. Wrong movie.
I can't remember the specifics but I've noticed when chess sets show up on TV shows, the position is often nonsense.
Another classic. 2001: A space odyssey.

Apparently, like Bogart, Kubrick was quite the chess player.

Hmmm i wonder if L. James is going to try to change careers into chess after Cleveland loses in the finals. Love to see that cry baby here.
Not off topic as that ego manic would create his own chess board and we hear about it every time a wins a game on it. Just can not imagine a chess board with King James written all over it. Pretty sure he make the King in his image.
I know you are going to love this one (the game takes about 9 min from there)
;)

Yes, I wonder why there are not games between he and Nabokov recorded, since they were working together in "Lolita".
The Lewis Set is the best set ever used in movies way cooler than the Drubovnik! Here it is from one of the Potter flicks!

Here is one of the most iconic movie chess scenes ever, playing chess was a much better option than the Waco Kid's other recreational sugestion, sure glad Sheriff Bart decided to play chess, or Blazzing Saddles would have been as bad of movie as Deliverance. They are using a pre- Staunton set pattern like St. George or something.

Hello,
Did you notice that in the first snapshot of the seventh seal the board is set up incorrectly?
Death is cheating ...
Ty Cgrau on the movie, it's uploaded on you tube. Subtitled but looks good as I watched the trailer. Put it on the large screen streaming you tube on the TV set. Technology is wonderful. added...Looks like just the trailer was sub-titled
