Chess Software and Linux

Its time to get a new laptop and I'm in a quandry.  Vista sucks, Mac is overpriced and overhyped (Coolness is not a selling point.  If I were interested in cool I wouldn't have been playing chess for the last 40 years).  I'm interested in going back to Linux but there seems to be a lack of chess software, especially in the database area.  I know for playing engines like Shredder are available.  SO does anyone know a good database, comparable to Chess Assistant or Chess Base?

Does anyone know of a decent interface for linux? I have used xboard but it is not that great.

People just try Linux Ubuntu.

It's free, complete and there are 3 versions of it.

  • A pc edition running on Intel x86-based systeems (including Intel Pentium and AMD atlon)
  • A 64 bit edition running on AMD64 or EM64T based computers (Athlon64, Opteroj, Em64T Xeon
  • A Mac edition running on modern G3, G4  and G5 computers, including iBooks and Powerbooks.

The source code for Ubuntu can be downloaded from archive.ubuntu.com

I'm not looking for a Linux flavor, I've got that, what I'm looking for is Chess Programs that run on linux.  SCID is ok but the last I looked rather limited in features and support.  I don't really want to give up all I find in Chess Assistant but I can live with Chess Base if I have to.

Use knights and try the various free chess engines available, crafty or gnu chess are way to strong for my level of play.
