Hey everybody, just need a little help picking out some books.

I plan on attending many tournaments this summer after school is finished and really want to boost my rating.

Right now I have,

1)Logical Chess Move by Move, by Irving Chernev

2) Amateurs Mind by jeremy silman (only read half of this one)

3) Silmans Endgame course by jeremy silman

4) Reassess your chess by jeremy silman (have not read this one yet

5)1000 Checkmate Combinations  by Victor Khenkin (i do about 10-15 puzzles a day

Is this enough for tactics though? The Silman books are really good for strategy and really explain how to play, but as far as tactics go, is that one book enough (1000 checkmate combos)?

This summer I plan to raise my rating from 1100 to as high as I can. I dont mind reading so please give me some advice(one day I wish to become a National Master, then maybe a GrandMaster if I can dedicate enough time)

The only books in your list that have anything (at all) to do with tactics (please understand the definition) in your list are:

3) Silmans Endgame course by jeremy silman (a few tactical patterns to KNOW in endgames) though using this book (however good it is) for tactics practice is inefficent.

5)1000 Checkmate Combinations  by Victor Khenkin (i do about 10-15 puzzles a day

Some more efficient books for somebody in your position would be:

- Chess Tactics for Students by Bain
- Winning Chess Exercises by Jeff Coakley

Though if you want to do what the cool kids are doing these days, practice tactics online or via software:

Online (in order of personal preference)

- ChessTempo
- Chess Tactics Server
- Chess.com

 Software
- PC (the venerable CT ART)
- Smartphone (a lot of good Android/iPhone tactics practice apps)

Chess Steps workbooks are the best for this below 1800 or so.

I also liked Dan Heisman's Back to Basics: Tactics.  My only gripe is the annoyingly small font size.

Susan Polgar also wrote a couple books, both are primarily tactics puzzles.  The first one appears to be out of print and going for big $ online, but her second one Chess Tactics for Champions is very reasonable.  I liked her books quite a bit.

If I were you, I'd focus my studies on tactics.  Sprinkle in some Chernev - his book is fantastic.  Also make time for some endgame study; good choice on Silman's book for that subject.

I personally didn't get much out of Amateurs Mind.  I recently read it and didn't see any sort of step change in my game.  HTRYC is one that I'm saving for a time when my rating is higher.

A legendary tactics book, which is one of my all time favourites, is Winning Chess by Chernev and Reinfeld. It has been published various times since the late 40s (I have the first edition hardback), but has been out of print for a while. However, it seems that Batsford have re-issued it in algebraic notation (I presume so, as they have also re-issued 'Study chess with Tal' and converted it into algebraic).

I highly recommend this book (The 40 full star reviews for an earlier edition speaks for itself.)

Forgot to add : Hertan's Power Chess for kids is also quickly gaining traction  as a great book for learning how to see tactics.
