Is there a way to select the color for the Bundle, on the website prior to ordering?

JoeyTroy

jv2080,

We only have the Midnight Blues in stock. However these are brand new devices from OEM. If you have further questions please feel free to use our contact form on the website for quicker service.

JoeyTroy

Fiby1709,

If you order today it will ship tomorrow with USPS Priority. Normally arrives in 2 business days. It may take longer if you live in a rural area. Check out USPS from zip code 87002 and choose Flat Rate Envelopes. We also offer express but it may or may not make sense if you are in a rural area.

JoeyTroy

It would ship out maybe Monday depending on what time you order for sure on a Tuesday with a Thursday delivery unless you paid express which would be Wednesday. I currently also only have one unit in stock and will be getting 1-2 more this week as I ran out of chargers and then another 40 units next week.

JoeyTroy

You bet!

JoeyTroy

Did you order a ChessNoteR yet? Also what is your zipcode?

JoeyTroy

Please respond to the email I sent you as it has tracking information on when the ChessNoteR will arrive.

As a TD, how do I know that the device I am presented with is actually one of these devices, and not a regular Nexus 6 spoofed to appear like one? Don’t assume I am an Android user, or that I am familiar with these devices at all when you formulate your answer.

I have been presented one of your devices by a parent of a player in one of my tournaments, along with the documentation from USCF saying it is approved. I would note that just because it is approved does not mean I am required to allow it.

If I have to adjudicate a game and review both players scores to do so, this complicated matters. One more device I need how to learn.

Additionally, many tournaments (and the USCF rules) can require that the score sheets be turned in at the end of the game. How is this possible with this device. Before you tell me I can hook it up to my laptop, I will tell you as an entering argument, a stranger’s electronic device is not going to be connected to my laptop period. If you propose to download a file from the device to your laptop and then somehow present it to me (email for instance) there is no way for me to know that file has not been manipulated.

How do we handle adjourned games, whose scores go in a sealed envelope?

I don’t think that the chess community writ large has fully considered and dealt with all of the implications of these devices.

One thing I will note. The unit I saw had a rounded back as opposed to a flat one. When sitting on the table it did not sit flush, and rocked back and forth when moves were entered. Other players at the same table pointed this out as they were irritated by it.

Overall I think it is an interesting idea, but I do think the tech is ahead of the rule making bodies guidance, which is why most TDS I know do not allow the use of them.

56ANAVZ,

Let me gladly answer your questions.

Correct you do not need to allow the ChessNoteR per US Rules 26A / 26B however you do need to post on your website or announcement that the rules have been modified and you also need be post it on the walls at the tournament that you are not allowing the ChessNoteR.

Since the device is touch screen if you are familiar with iPhone / Android it's very easy you use. More information is listed on our website with the complete manual in PDF form and also YouTube Vidoes

I know you don't want to hear it but the device can be plugged into your laptop. It shows up like a USB drive to easily copy the files, if you are not comfortable with that the user can push the files to Dropbox and share the files with, there will be a PGN, PDF scoresheet with signed signatures from the screen, and a text LOG file with every touch on the screen that was done during the game based on time stamp so you know it was legal. Also the user can not modify the games once they are completed.

How do we handle adjourned games, whose scores go in a sealed envelope?

I have never seen an adjourned game happen in my many years of chess, mind you I play in New Mexico and we have a much smaller community of chess players than other states. In that case my recommendation would be transcribe from the device to a score sheet. Since US Chess nor FIDE has anything in the written rules about electronic notation and adjournment I don't have a good answer for you.

One thing I will note. The unit I saw had a rounded back as opposed to a flat one. When sitting on the table it did not sit flush, and rocked back and forth when moves were entered. Other players at the same table pointed this out as they were irritated by it.

They do make flat back cases for the devices, however I am currently working to certify 3 more devices with US Chess and they are all flat back. I am also working on a new update after speaking with  multiple TD's at the Las Vegas International Chess Festival and will be adding the ability for the TD to view all touches on the screen while the game in progress.

If you have further questions please feel free to post here or send them through the website and they will come directly to me.

Thanks, a good set of answers.
JoeyTroy

My pleasure!

I appreciate that you're making something new and want it to be an improvement over the way things are. I just don't like the idea that it an be used to analyze moves during the game, as moves can be input and then taken back on the device. As if the player had a small board set up and was trying out moves before playing them on the tournament game board.

Do you have any ideas on how to prevent that?

The fact that it is Wi-Fi capable is also disturbing. Sooner or later it will be hacked.

JoeyTroy

BlackKaweah,

The moves on the tournament board are no different than MonRoi, eNotate or PlyCounter. All of them would allow you to fix moves and even create moves to analyze the position while in tournament mode. Currently there is a LOG file that is generated after the game to show each touch on the screen so a TD or Arbiter can see if the user was cheating. Also I am working on an update so TD's and Arbiters can see all the touches while the game is in play to negate cheating even further.

In terms of the Wi-Fi it can only be used to push games to Dropbox and also check for updates for the device. There is no web browser in the system so it can't be used to surf the net. The operating system and also all updates are signed with a 2048bit SSL key. Also all updates are downloaded off SSH which authenticates the device for connection with another 2048bit SSL key and Token. I have spent over 5 years modifying the Android Operating system so users can not execute or install applications and integrated multiple levels of security to eliminate cheating with these units. Can they be hacked? Sure as long as you can hack the 2048bit SSL keys.
