I've never heard of Chessnut until now.

A dedicated, self-moving, computerized chess set is nothing new, though obviously the playing strength is. The 1984 film The Lonely Guy has a very funny scene demonstrating one available at the time. Naturally, there are a few modifications to the operation adding a voice after it wins to make it resemble a condescending, "I just beat the patzer" chess player. The offer to shake hands, not available on the actual computer, is a nice touch too. Chessnut should take note and introduce an a**hole mode.

Milton Bradley (MB) went one step further and eliminated the arm. It more closely resembles the soon to be released Chessnut self-mover. Unfortunately, the MB set makes a lot of noise when it moves, perhaps like some human opponents you've had in the past.

I have a feeling this gimmick will not last long, probably no longer than those earlier models. I may be wrong; we'll see. Perhaps what would really make it sell would be a disembodied hand that twirls a captured pawn between thumb and middle finger to disturb your thinking. This would be Chessnut's Nakamura model, and it could come with various "inconsiderate" modes. Later on they can release the Niemann model that has unkempt hair and cheats when you least expect it. If they truly want to make their units life-like, these would be worthy additions.

Chessnut has been pretty successful in the e-board market over the last 2-3 years.

They are a fairly solid company, young and small. Based in China, they currently have 5 different e-board models out. They are talked about quite a bit on this sub-forum.

Yea , sure nothing new under the sun as we know  fightingbob Still chessnut make great stuff for such a small company with a growing fanbase here ? So must be doing something right ? As for the eboards one of the best on the market .wink

"Never heard 'bout Chessnut"... hmm...

I think the Chessnut Move is going to be more than a gimmick.

There's a video circulating on FB showing the Chessnut Move responding to Voice Commands like "Setup Today's Daily Puzzle".

From the video it appeared that the Chessnut Move is a chessboard with a chess virtual assistant built in.

Might return the Evo I bought a week ago if it's under $1k and not too noisy. I'm fascinated with how the pieces move and would love to see someone do a breakdown of the machine itself.

Good for the end-user that there's no monopoly in the e-boards market. My guess is that the next generation of e-boards (after advent of AGI) will be holographic-teleport ones, where chess-puzzle position on the (physical) board shifts with even greater refresh rate then on the actual screen...

Here's a better photo , I don't like the base of the set so much / Guess it needs strong magnets in order to move around at some speed ? wink

nik1111

Mini-robots underneath or two rulers operating pieces at intersection point. Magnets must be stronger than "Go's" ones. Yea, the base have "superfluous" margins but they are probably unavoidable.

ChessconnectDGTTest

The base of the pieces is really awful. They could have painted just the exterior of the magnet and shape it more like a real chess piece base. They way they look now, would make me quit playing..

Thank you @KingMoored - that looks good.

They posted on Reddit about the bases:

The current bottom design is not the final version, so it might not look very polished at the moment. The wheels are visible, but we’ve taken player experience into account, ensuring that the feel of manually moving the pieces is almost identical to that of regular chess pieces. We plan to send test samples to YouTube influencers for reviews in January, and that version will be closer to the final production version.

Thanks, they also posted a couple of replies in the video about the bases and piece design.

Chessnut says the metal bottoms are temporary. They're planning on making it as smooth as moving real chess pieces. We will see how well that goes...

Here's what they said in the video

"Due to natural color variations in wood, we use metallic spray paint in this color for the wooden piece sets, which helps to better integrate with both wood-colored and ebonized pieces. For the plastic piece sets, we use an integrated design, providing a stronger sense of unity and allowing users to choose according to their preferences. I like the plastic Black White pieces better than the wood pieces.

I like those better as well. Will be interesting to see that the final pieces will look like.
