Huge improvement!

Avatar of JeffBosch

You guys have inspired me. My Centaur arrived yesterday, and the board itself looks much nicer than I expected. I ordered a roll of 1" aluminum self-adhesive discs from Grainger, so now I just need to decide which set to convert. Can't wait!

Please Sabarian, which height is the king?are they weightered? Where did  you buy it?

Do people here think that Stauton 6 is too large..?

Amazon does not have much to choose...I am looking for my chesspieces for centaur

Thanks in advance,

Jose

I think Stauton 6 is is to large, 5 is perfect.

Update: my parents are getting me one!!!! So excited... happy.png

Congratulations! You’ll like it a lot!

Staunton 5 is perfect for the board. Several people have used that size with great success.

The plastic pieces aren’t bad! You’ll still enjoy the game play.

yeah! I'm paying for about half the price and they're paying for the other. I've been saving for a while...

Hey guys, been admiring the work you have all done to get the wood pieces adapted to the Centaur!  Nice sets.  I didn't want to buy another set of chessmen as I have quite a few already, so thought I could adapt an existing set.

I was going to use some nice and very playable HOS Reykjavik II Plastic pieces in red and white that I have, 3.75" King, but with a 1.65" King base they're a fraction too large, at least for the King, taking 88% of the square.

Then I tried some HOS Marshall Library plastic pieces, but with a 2.875" King with a 1.3" base, overall the set seems too small.  (Although they are ideal for a board with 1.75" squares, and the Centaur squares are not far off at 1.875".  It's just the set seems a bit diminutive because of the King being 1/2" shorter that the Centaur 3.375" King, and the other pieces much smaller than those of the Centaur.  (This is actually a set I probably shouldn't have picked up on sale BTW as I'm having a hard time finding a suitable board!)

Then I remembered a nice set I got with a green and cream chessboard nearly 20 years ago.  All leather bottomed pads, lacquered pieces, Staunton design, 3.75" King with a 1.5" base, ideal for a 2" square board, so like the DGT running at exactly 80% of the square here.  My sole concern is that the board will look _slightly_ more crowded as the King and Queen and Knight are bulkier and the King is .38" taller, the Queen .25" taller, and the Knight .43" taller with a .11" wider base.

The rook however is identical to the Centaur rook, an exact copy, and the wood pawn is only 1/16" larger base diameter, with a slightly more bulbous crown.  BUT, they are also far heavier, and I'm not sure if that will be an issue with play?  The green and antique boxwood pieces are nice.  (I don't know what DGT was thinking; simple cream / antique coloring for the white would have really set off against the white squares; I don't like playing white on white...)

Anyway, analysis paralysis, here are the specs on both sets, and a couple of pics, let me know what you think, thanks! (Apologies for organizing the data this way, hopefully it will be legible):

DGT Plastic vs. Lacquered Wood / Weight and Base

K  35.53 g/1.25 oz - 1.5" Base      69.39g/2.45 oz - 1.56" Base

Q  28.33 g/.99 oz - 1.375" Base      71.1 g/2.5 oz. - 1.5" Base

B  21.34 g/.75 oz. - 1.25" Base      45.2 g/1.59 oz. - 1.3" Base

K  21.69 g/.76 oz. - 1.25" Base      56.02 g/1.97 oz. - 1.3" Base

R  21.38 g/.75 oz. - 1.25" Base      37.75 g/1.33 oz. - 1.25" Base

P  10.9 g/.38 oz. - 15/16" Base      28.45 g/1 oz. - 1.06" Base

A few pictures:

DGT / Wood piece comparison (I have no idea why the program rotates this pic 90 deg. to the left!)

DGT black with Green lacquered wood

I have some HVAC tape for the bottoms that should work, but think I might just cheat and order the 1" aluminum rounds from Demon Tweek that Sabarian referenced here.  Please take a look at the weight differences between the two sets and let me know if you think that would be an issue, as well as if you think the wood pieces look too bulky on the board.

I appreciate any input; I'll order the aluminum rounds and hopefully those will be recognized by the system.  Thanks again.

P.S. In looking back through the thread I'm impressed with how GMcKinney got the foil so even on the bottoms of each piece.  I tried cutting rounds for my bases but couldn't get it consistent and didn't want to take a chance on scratching the wood.

And I just noticed that the pieces Sabarian showed are very similar in size to mine; they are definitely a bit larger than the DGT pieces but look great.

Nice setup, does anyone know when dgt will release a wooden set for centaur. I want one like that and without the obvious square rings on board.
