DGT Centaur Wooden Pieces

I could not manage to get the prefabricated foil disks and for some reason it did not work with the ones I cut myself. I assume the foil was not flat enough after cutting and did not create enough contact for induction. But I managed to achieve the same result by attaching some thin metal disks, which already come with an adhesive side.

And just for the sake of completeness...the DGT Centaur works perfectly well without any tweaking, when you use ivory chess sets. wink.png

Hello

Can you share a link on where you purchased the thin metal disks Thanks.

@GabbyEmma - I only have a link to the German Amazon website. Hope it still helps. https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B007Y4I3VI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Anyone know if this works with a DGT Bluetooth board? I tried substituting pawns with different US coins and it never registered a move with my DGT Pi.

@Psychotica - I doubt it. As far as I know the DGT sensor technology in the DGT Boards (regardless whether USB or Bluetooth) works with piece-type and piece-color specific passive LC circuits in particular resonance frequencies, which cannot be replaced by simple coins or metal plates.

Ok. That's unfortunate, I would love to have a better set than I currently have but without breaking the bank. Thanks for the info..

I finished my project. I've used:

- Weighted wooden Staunton 5 pieces

- Self adhesive aluminium radiator foil 2.5 cm wide

- A cutting machine my girlfriend uses for her own hobby projects

- A cutting die with a diameter of 2 cm.

I didn't want to remove the felt as I wanted to preserve the cushioning feel you get with felt when placing a piece on a square. Instead I put the aluminium foil straight on the felt. It worked beautifully and is also much easier then the proces of removing the felt. I retained the softer felt feel even on the pawns and the centaur works perfectly. The foil seems to be securely attached to the felt. I think it will hold for a long time but I'll make sure to have some replacement foil ready in case some might loosen over time. I think the new wooden pieces are a huge improvement in looks but also in playing comfort. I really hated the lack of contrast between the white squares and the white pieces.

THIS is a hack that I can do. Thanks for the tip!

Absolutely! Believe me, if I can do it anybody can do it! And it's definitely worth it.

Only caveat is the cutting tool. It’s more expensive than the Alt wooden chess set!

Avatar of Carrinthe

Well the cutting tool is not really necessary. If you have a round object of approximately 2 cm diameter you can just draw circles and cut them out with scissors. Even that is not necessary, Just cutting squares of a roll also works fine but it just doesn't look as good.  Or just buy pre cut aluminium circles JeffBosch found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y7DKEK?pldnSite=1 I used the cutting machine because it was available for me for free.

Decided to try lazy option #2: sticker foil. Then I saw something interesting.

Avatar of Carrinthe

Yes, I saw that too.  Clearly DGT missed a chance selling a wooden version of the Centaur. There is demand for it.

The pre-cut foils from Amazon worked like a charm. I’ll post pics as soon as I have all the pieces upgraded.

Has anybody done this with a dgt eboard?  I know that the pieces use a different system, some kind of copper windings on a ferrite core inside each piece.  I'd be interested in hearing from somebody who has messed around with it.

Avatar of chessroboto

You'll need the unique cores from DGT to make any piece DGT-enabled. Not sure if you can recycle the guts from existing DGT pieces,  but I know that manufacturers who make their own DGT-enabled pieces have to buy a full kit from DGT.

Does anyone have PICs of what these DGT coils look like?

Or their measurements?

Avatar of ifekali

DGT coils are cylinders, two sizes:

12 mm x 12 mm x 27 mm (for kings, queens & rooks)

12 mm x 12 mm x 14 mm (bishops, knights & pawns)

Well, actually, these are the hole size recomendations, the coils themselves are just a hair smaller.

This is the first time I’ve seen the actual components of DGT pieces. Have to admit I’m excited, shocked and curious all at the same time.
