DGT non-electronic chess set?

Sort:
InsignificantlyYours

I was thinking of getting a wooden chess set and the electronic ones are way out of my price range.

  • What do people have to say about the DGT non-electronic walnut board + timeless pieces?
  • Are there any alternatives in the same (or cheaper) price range I should consider?

What is there to say? They are the same as the electronic board peices but don't have the electronic id chip in the base. Either you like them or you don't.

I actually own a set of the DGT non electronic Timeless pieces - I ordered them because I liked the idea of playing with the "actual" pieces that are used in so many tournaments (minus the electronics of course!)

The one thing I noticed though is that DGT ships these pieces unprotected in a plastic bag so you can expect them to be dinged up a little when you get them. It's a little odd that they made this choice and would definitely affect my decision to buy if I had known this in advance.

I can say they're not "identical" to other german knight sets. Even though the design is similar the DGT set definitely has its own unqiue character. Are these minor differences worth the extra money? That's up to you!

All in all though it's a good looking and sturdy set that has become my daily driver. And I wouldn't hesitate to throw it in my chess bag for when I'm playing on the road...

That's nice to hear. I'm planning on buying one. Do you have an idea where these pieces are made from? Netherlands, India or other country?

Are the glossy or at least premium looking?

Chess Bazaar German knight set:

and the non-electronic DGT:

They look almost the same. Are your DGT pieces made in India?

I would rather go with Chessbazaar than DGT if you're looking for a solid, basic wooden set. The DGTs (with electronics) I had were a higher level than these, but they were still not terribly well made.

BTW: All those sets are made in India, but by different manufacturers.

Ok thanks. So I guess NOJ is the only one manufacturing chess pieces outside of India.

Not the ONLY one, but none of these companies make an affordable wooden set.

You can get a set from Spain that's affordable and actually made there: https://chess-shop-escacimat.com/wooden-pieces/443-25387-staunton-mora-play-wooden-pieces.html#/184-pieces_wood_colors-honey_and_black/250-pieces_king_height-6

I have observed many of the wooden chess boards have uneven square size at the edges of the board. You can try to measure the width of the a- and h-file squares with a ruler and compare them with the width of the other squares. You might find that they are narrower by 1 to 3 mm! I own a couple of chessboards and notice this issue in most of them. Only a few had perfectly uniform squares. I wonder why it’s so difficult to make boards with uniform squares.

Did you notice this on DGT boards? Or cheaper boards? I noticed this on a cheaper board also. From Poland I believe.
