From DGT, only the discontinued and expensive Revolution II have the led to show the opponent move on the board.
The Centaur and Pegasus also have the circular led on each square but they are kind of small and made of plastic. The Pegasus works for online play. The Centaur don’t (is a 100% stand alone system).
To be honest to play on a physical board with an online opponent only works for me with a rapid or classical time control. Maybe Blitz 5 min + increment could work for some people. The time spent to make the move for the other and the divided attention between your analysis/calculation and waiting/looking to the Pi to check the next move is distracting for me. The beep is very annoying to me. I generally turn it off.
In an end game, with a short time left, it will be a mess. A really disadvantage.
Blitz and bullet online is better on screen. Long time control, you can replicate in an ordinary board + pieces, the smart+Pi is not really necessary.
What I like in the smart board + Pi are the several different engines to play or to study. Playing with Stockfish at level 20 is like having the opportunity to play a super GM whenever you want.
Hope one day DGT can stop this product segment strategy and make a blend of smart+PI, Centaur and Pegasus in one affordable wood product with 55 mm led squares.
Good luck with your choice.
