DGT Red Box: Plastic Set

There is something really funny about this.

Stauntonmaster has been saying that all these people are being faked and frauded by these Chess sellers.

And this other guy is claiming how bad everything except DGT is garbage.

And now these two guys are being faked and frauded by a Chess seller themselves, DGT.

Right. So, any comments that might be helpful to someone who opens the topic on the DGT Red Box? The DGT 960 specifically? The DGT plastic pieces?

I own and use a few of the DGT 960 clocks.  I keep them with some portable and smaller sets for when I play on tables that are smaller or have less room to play, like when eating with a friend at a Perkins Restaurant.

These clocks are great for that, but be aware that they are only good for one time control and are not best suited for all tournament play.

I had a set of the pieces and thought they were alright but not that special, so I gave those away.

If you are looking for an inexpensive starter type of setup like this, I would suggest giving The Chess House a phone call or Shelby at American Chess Equipment a call.

They would best be able to get you a nice setup at a very reasonable price.

Should've gotten the brown box because it comes with the DGT1002 bonus. So you basically only pay 13 Euros for the board and pieces. I have no experience with these laminated boards, but I think I prefer vinyl. Either way, a pretty good deal nonetheless.

That list is pretty funny. I've never seen FIDE use any of those other brands. The DGT XL is the most elegant modern digital chess clock, I think DGT should reissue it.

I can see how you think the list is funny.  You obviously live in the Netherlands and do not get around much.  That's alright.

Sure, you think DGT is the only place to buy Chess stuff, and I can understand that.  Realize that there are plastic sets and other clocks available that are just as nice as the DGT products, and some even nicer.  That's alright, too.

And yes, there are some sets and clocks not as nice as the DGT products.  But as we say in America, the Sun doesn't rise and set on DGT.

FIDE doesn't use clocks themselves, as an organization.

Remember that there is money paid to FIDE to have a clock certified or authorized.

By the way, I also liked the DGT XL and I think DGT would do well to reissue it.

I would not call it elegant, but then I don't think any digital clock is elegant.  If you want elegance you need to go back to the wood analog clocks like the Jerger and some of the other older clocks you will see on this forum.

Where did I say that DGT is the only place to buy chess products? Don't put words in my mouth please. I just said I prefer old fashioned vinyl boards over their laminated boards, but I have no real experience with them. And FYI I'd take a Chronos clock over those other brands on that list. Obviously FIDE doesn't agree, but then again FIDE is a strange organisation.

That's why I specified "most elegant modern digital chess clock". I think it's a looker and more stylish than the DGT3000. But you can have your own opinion.

Ah indeed. Thanks for the link.

I was surprised to see LEAP in the list of endorsed clocks.

They are rather cheap and you can find them at a very good price on Aliexpress!

And my leap which is branded by WSC with their name is better than my DGT/NA period end. I had it at the 201 Senior Open and everyone who saw it agreed it was easier to read for the TD as well as the players and it shows minutes and seconds all the time unlike the DGT N/A tha only shows minutes and seconds below 20 minutes. It us under this name and on sale for $32.99.

You say it is in all national tournaments and use the US flag as your country of origin but I know you are from the UK. So stop the telling of non truths since you have no idea what clocks we use in the USA and what we prefer.

Fide and all professional chess players also agree with Ventudius. In American, European and anywhere in the world only DGT clocks are used. People can watch any serious chess tournaments on Youtube and see what type of clocks are used.

Please do not speak in the name of other players (pro or not).

It's a stupid mistake to think that a product is more legit because most people buy it.

Do you know the "moutons de Panurge" ? Of course you don't.

Finally my kid got his DGT starter pack - brown version!

We visited a chess club for the first time yesterday morning, and he had so much fun he begged me to come back again. So this pack was just the perfect present for his birthday (it was today)

The magnet box is classy. The folded carboard board on the top is good looking and not too bright with good a square size.

Then the chessmen. I expected them to be too small but they are just the right (club) size. Nice soft color, sturdy feel, the weight is good, the felt is thin but ok. They seems bulky but very pleasant to manipulate. My boy unpacked the pieces and already love them. So do I.

But when he saw the little chess clock inside the box, he couldn't believe his eyes!

"A real chessclock? Like the Pros? Oh dad I am so happy !!!"

I smiled and I didn't say a word but I was rather satified of the WOW effect happy.png !

The clock in the pack is the DGT1002. Beautiful compact design, very stable, no lever/switch on the top but two flat buttons on each side making nice click sound. Settings are straight forward and the clock is ready to rock in no time.

We played a few games and the overall set is really nice to use.

Very cheap pack with everything you need to begin chess in good conditions.

I am very satisfied.

Brown box is the way to go, and nice to hear your son enjoys chess 👍

just got back to chess after more than a 20 years absence.

my oldest boy (6 y) got some chess classes at pre school so i bought this set for both of us.

i'll leave my review as soon as it arrives.

Avatar of Kobalskiev

just received it (the brown box). nice beginner set as for board and pieces. the card board is nice but I suspect that it won't last that much. the pieces are solid and ready for some 6y (and 4)old action. the bonus watch it's very very nice.

Avatar of Kobalskiev

after some days of heavy use (kids and study), I can say it's a cool and honest set.

the board it's nice. not glossy at all. I like the colors, very smooth to the eyes.

again, it will not last since it's cardboard, but it is what it is. the notations are good for teaching and studying.

pieces are not very heavy but well balanced. sturdy, they handle well with two young kids.

the only (and big, I admit) setback for this box is the lack of extra queens...

is it possible to buy them separately? I tried to find that information, but couldn't...
