Hello, I use the DGT Smartboard without notation + the original plastic pieces since 2 year and I am very happy about my decision. The plastic pieces are weight enough, better and stabil as the non weighted wooden pieces. And cheaper. But that's a matter of taste.
DGT Smartboard + CLASSIC Chess pieces - buying advice for specific purpose
Johann960 - thank you for your opinion.
How about blending white plastic pieces with white squares on the DGT Smartboard?
Looking at pictures on the internet it seems that wooden Classic pieces would be better than plastic.
No, my pieces are not White. Please have a look on the DGT site.
But thats your choice and a matter of taste.

Hello,
I am considering buying a set like this:
DGT Smartboard + CLASSIC Chess pieces
It would cost about 354 EUR:
https://chessgamesemporium.com/en/shop/sahovski-kompleti/electronic-chess-sets/dgt-smart-board-with-indices-classic-chess-pieces/I would not like to spend more and I am keen on a tournament size board.
Anyone using this set? I'm afraid of plastic board + non weighted pieces, but it's the only way to keep costs as low as possible.
The above set would be used for OTB games with friends and would serve me mainly as a notepad to later analyse the games played at home. We usually play 15 minute or 15+10 games. Believe me I've tried notating moves on paper, I've tried notating moves using an Ipad and it never worked. Every time I'm low on time the notating just fails and I go back home with nothing. I am a beginner at chess and I am very keen to analyse later to become a better player.
I don't care about playing online (chess.com / lichess), because I use my laptop / ipad for it
What do you guys think about it? Would it work for that specific purpose only?
Thank you in advance for your help and valuable comments.

Hi, it is clear I'm not a very strong player, however I'd like to give my contribution anyway, since I believe that the situation we're discussing here has not much to do with playinh strenght.
Simply said: I think you're facing a non-issue, or otherwise a problem you created yourself.
Your process seems to be:
1- I play rapid games
2- I want to analyse them at home to become a stronger player
3- I can't analyse the games because I fail in writing all the moves (either I fail writing the moves till the end, or I lose on time, because I lose time in writing them).
4- I therefore spend 350 € to buy a DGT board, which I will use to play, leveraging the chessboard function to "record" all the moves. This will give me the game moves to analyse.
Correct?
The mistake is in step 1, and not only.
Correct step 1: You need primarily to play Classical games. Long games. This will give you much more valuable material to study and analyse. This alone brings the fact that you will have enough time to write on paper all your moves. In the vast majority of games, either you win before the time goes by, or you lose before the time finishes. You don't need a DGT board.
Additionally, in Classical games, where there is no time increment, you can stop writing games in the last 5 minutes.
In Rapid games, FIDE rules say you don't have to write moves down, however I understand you want to do so, to then re-play your games at home. You can use an old smartphone, next to the board, to "film" the entire game, if the smartphone memory allows for that.
These are my 2 cents, hope this helps and best wishes for your improvement.

In my experience, the recording of games does not always work properly. Also, only 500 moves are recorded.
You have to transfer them to your PC at home. You have to install the software on your PC.
My tip: For your training with friends, first play longer games without time control and ‘practise’ taking notes of the games. You will have to do the same in a tournament. In my opinion, 15+10 is not so suitable for training.
P.S. I connect the notebook directly to the DGT board during the training game and save the game directly in Chessbase. But this is the most expensive solution.
Good luck.

Personally, I train with my DGT connected to Acid Ape Chess, where the Maia engine runs. This way, the game (beyond being on Acid Ape) is saved on the cloud. From there, I import it in whatever chess SW I want (usually ChessBase or Fritz).

This is a very useful setup, and the table where the chessboard stays, is very tidy, with the smartphone sitting on a small stand.
