Yes, it was the Worldwide Church of God , which-unlike many Protestant denominations-is a cult. I think he had a falling out with them later, if I remember correctly(and it is possible I don't).

I'm not going to be that hard on Fischer for his mental illness. Considering his past, it isn't surprising that he had some paranoid tendencies that caused him to go down the antisemitic rabbit hole. I admire his playing ability and agree with him about some of the things he said about chess. I wish he had had a happier life.
Without talking ill over the dead / worse part was he never defended his title . seems like he just got bitter with life . He did join some kind of a cult after his win + gave way all his money + disowning his child or said child .
