Power Chess or Power Chess 98? I've never seen it but it sounds like it was quite a program.
Does anyone remember this chess software?

after reading the reviews..
indeed it sounds like what that guy was asking.
is it free? it sounds good
Unless you've got Windows 95/98 still running someplace, it probably doesn't matter. For instance: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_get_Power_Chess_98_to_play_on_your_windows_XP
Thanks!
I am a fan of 95 but i have vista.. so i will probably download that software to play Power Chess.
Oh man, and that awful Battlechess... Although that game probably introduced more new players to the game than any other

Ha ha! Yeah, that thing was unplayable. At least, I certainly never played it to win. Remember when that one Bishop would summon a swarm (flock?) of bats to consume the piece he was taking? Good stuff.
The Chess System Tal sounds interesting... Not one I'd heard of before.

e.g. me
Sounds like a blast... better, I'm gathering, than just setting Computer Opponent X on "Suicidal" on the usual 'style' setting.
By the way, apparently bats don't come in flocks. It's a 'cloud' of bats.

CSTal was a true original. It was not designed to play correct chess or to play other computers. It played purely for complications, actively looking for ways to make the position as messy and irrational as possible. Totally fearless, CSTal played like an overconfident drunken master with a sadistic streak and a gift for sacrifice. To this day, it's the single most aggressive chess player I have ever seen. I miss it.
What a recommendation! I'll keep an eye out for it.
6 words is outside the scope of what your attention span can handle? What the hell is the world coming to.

Never forget it as long as I live. I was a kid, and I went nuts when I saw the Chess Pieces actually got into fights with each other and killed each other. Only thing was, that taught players to always capture, because you wanted to see the fights!
I absolutely loved this program, it was the exact type of instruction that I learn from. Instead of simply presenting preset lessons, it reviewed YOUR game play.
Twin game engines running in parallel, you would play against the King while the Queen watched the game. Then she would immediately after replay your game and comment on moves. Given it was not perfect, and truly only taught the giuoco piano (quiet game) opening, but if it had been expanded and upgraded I believe it would have taken over Chessmaster's dominance.
To appreciate its engine, watch here as the Queen replays her game with Deep Blue at the World Chess Championship.

And here is an example of the Queen reviewing your game play, on the earlier PowerChess (95).
[I just noticed this comment on this video. "This is my second video of PowerChess. Running in a virtual machine under windows 95. I switch on the most comprehensive commentaries, so You can imagine the real power of this program. Once again I play"The King", while "The Queen" analyses the game afterwards." So perhaps my understanding described below is in error, and there is hope for us all to still play the Queen.]
The great weakness in the PowerChess series is that it was written very DEEP in the machine code. Hence it require a complete rewrite when Win98 was released. Alas, they simply could not generate the base to support such massive coding with every whim of Microsoft. And the Queen was laid to rest.
Long Live the Queen!
I can't remember the title or publisher, but it was an amusing application... Here's all I've got:
- Came out during the late '90s or early '00s
- PC software
- The focus was instructive, and the metaphor was that the Queen was your tutor. You would play games against various chess-themed AI opponents (and if memory serves, playing against the cranky "King" was the equivalent of a rated game), and after a game, you could listen to the Queen do a verbal post-mortem on your performance.. I can still see her animated face hovering in the shadows over the chessboard...
I have been googling without much luck, I'm afraid.
...Anyone?
Cheers!
