Dubrovnik

With all the plastic chess pieces available, how come there's not one decent plastic Dubrovnik chess set?

There's one set out of Europe but a video on YouTube gives it mixed reviews. Says the weights are set in wax.

Another set on Etsy that is 3D printed but the pieces look rough. As in not polished like the BCE 3D sets being talked about on here.

I have the set you are talking about. Yes it is filled with wax. Which is an odd thing to use for gluing and filling up the pieces. Personally as long as you don't use them during summer time. They are not a bad set to use. They use that set a lot in tournaments over there is Serbia and the other Yugoslavia break away countries. You will even see these used in blitz games if you watch Balkan Chess channel on YouTube.

There is a plastic Dubrovnik II set in cream & brown. They are slightly weighted but with sand. Another odd choice for weighting. These have better stability but the molding is quite poor. Also the Queen and King are too similar to most western chess players. I painted the Queen's crown grooves opposite colors to signify the Queens. This is not a bad set but it could be better.

If you order either set. I would order 2 of each. One to get extra Queens. Two to have spares or swap out the bad with good extra pieces.

I'm hesitant to order the waxed pieces. My room is so hot in the winter then you can hang meat in here in the summer. I'd be too afraid the temperature difference would cause the wax to come free in time.

You can always but them in the fridge. happy.png

It's kinda why I'm haven't jumped on a wood set yet. I don't know how it'll stand up. I have a Walmart wood set that came with my folding board. It's kind of an experiment to see how it reacts in here.

I could always store them in an ammo box under the bed.

Moisture is what kills a wooden set the most. Yeah extreme heat and cold can effect the wood but not to the scale of moisture does. Bag them and store them in an Army Surplus ammo can is a good option if you have high humidity. I use them to store my playing cards in. I am a playing cards collector.

I used to go to the US playing card company in Cincinnati Ohio a lot when I used to do magic tricks. Now they are based out of Erlanger, Kentucky.

That set on Etsy offered for free of their STL files on Thingverse .com can be 3D printed. The guy on Etsy who sells the Dubrovnik offered by Thingverse doesn't use quality PLA and has real attitude issues when I had asked him about making me a set using certain more suitable looking PLA filaments. We parted messaging rather quickly because I don't deal with such nonsense from individuals with punk attitudes. Here are his photos of the set "he claims to have made". I agree with you they look very roughly printed, perhaps the PLA was of poor quality and a shoddy looking choice of PLA material color and the settings were somewhat skewed from correctly being set into the printer's computer base.

Now here's the set with better quality PLA and better setting adjustments to the 3D printer. As you can see the Thingverse version of the Dubrovnik is really close to the original Durbronik made in Yugoslavia for the Dubrovnik Championships back in the 1950s.

Something to think about if you use the free STL files for the Dubrovnik set from Thingverse.com and if you can obtain the use of a 3D printer and get the color filaments that suit your taste. FYI.

I bought this plastic set from a seller in Serbia. Unusual in that the King's have crosses for finials. Nice solid pieces and low gravity centers. It's the same one used in the video here ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx6w1mKlywM

This plastic version of Dubrovnik set is much better quality than the 3D printer version.

If you mean mine Thanks happy.png . It is used a lot in the former Yugoslavia Countries. They play pretty rough with it and it is very strong.

Would you happen to know where this set can be gotten from someone other than the Etsy guy? (I sent a few questions his way and the way he answered did not inspire confidence...)

As I do not have a 3d printer and am unlikely to get one in the near future.

@Wes; Contact  Izmet Fekali with a private message on this website and ask about this issue of wanting the Dubrovnik in a 3D print. He can give you details.

Hope this helps. Peace.

Yes Ronbo 710, your plastic dubrovnik is much better quality than the cheap-looking 3D printer version.

Avatar of QtoQlevel3

Nothing wrong with 3D printed Dubrovnik it's all in the type of filament used for printing.

Just received mine today from Izmet Fekali.

Dubrovnik STL Files from Thingiverse. Padauk and Lightwood PLA filament.

I like Ronbo's set because his is more polished but his set lacks some details in the knights. The printed version looks good to me.

This plastic set looks better than the 3D printer one.

I like the 3d set more than the plastic set .I guess the 3d ones are eco - friendly.
