Dubrovnik label idea for Plano box

Ever since my chess pieces got neatly stored away in those inexpensive Plano boxes, I wanted to label them even though you can kind of see through them. Well, after reading the often-angry Jaques of London thread on this forum, I had a lightbulb moment. Armed with Microsoft Power Point and a color printer, I went on to draft a prototype label for my plastic Dubrovnik. Didn't have to incorporate any fancy image or anything, just used default fonts, patterns and filled the rectangles with proper shade of green. The photos are uploaded in order and pretty much self explanatory.

The only serious contemplation I had to do was whether to glue the finished label inside the box, just like a Jaques, or affix them outside the box. In the end, I made a tradeoff by simply sticking the label inside the Plano box but facing it outwards and scotch taped it. This way I can stack the boxes without scratching the labels, read them without opening, and also be able to remove it without creating a mess when it needs to be upgraded, such as when the pieces are switched to another one for some reason. Well, I'm already thinking about how to revise the label for my other chess pieces. Why not give it a try?

Very nice, especially for that inexpensive plastic set.

Thanks. At least I didn't put them in a lavish mahogany casket, supposedly "the perfect choice for serious players and those with an eye for the finer things in life," according to Jaques of London :-)

I have posted on this forum before about using these Plano boxes to store all my Chess sets.  For the larger size piece sets I use a Plano box with a handle.  For most of my sets I use the size pictured here, 3700 - 2.  I also use a thin layer of foam in the bottom to cushion the pieces.

These are great as they stack well and fit in a bag nicely.

By the way, I really like this label idea, and putting on the inside of the lid,

I'm surprised no one has asked for your Powerpoint file yet.

OK, I'll be the first. Can you please share your Powerpoint file?

That is a nice touch. Especially if there is ever an estate sale or hand it down within the family. Nice idea I might do it for my custom set. Since it is a one of a kind set. Might be helpful of the origin of the set as well.

Ah really good idea, to have the labels.

I was wondering how you was going to protect the label form the elements, if the label was on top of the box, i see you paste them inside.

I have some Avery labels here that i can get trough the printer an they are transparent material, I am wondering if I print it backwards, will it look straight when it is stick to the inside of the box?

By the way, I do no have a significant collection of set, the ones that does not have a box, a Drueke is just inside some plastic jar i got out of the dollar store.

Thanks for asking. Here's the file:

I have an old version of Power Point so it may not appear correctly on the latest version. Try tinkering a bit with the fonts and sizing to fit your needs. Hope it helps.

@htdavid - You can glue the label on the jar, cut & stick a transparent sheet of plastic on top. Another method is to simply slide the label in a ziplock bag and tape that onto the jar.

where did you get your set?

Got it from chessgameshop of Slovenia. Here's the product page:

If you prefer wood, there's another shop in Slovenia:

Another way is to use clear packing tape to cover the label on the outside.

@Eyechess - Clear packing tape is excellent. Thanks for the suggestion.
