Enjoying the new look of my DGT Smartboard ....

If the board could still read the moves through the vinyl chessboard then it would probably be readable through a high quality vinyl decal/sticker. You can custom order them online to the specs of the board.

With a 4" inch solid brass sextant ;o)

Thanks, that's interesting. Do you have any links to any of those companies please?
The board can read the piece before you even place it on the surface.

I'm not a great fan of the faux wood look on the Smarthboard, has a slight purplish colour cast in some lights. Love the fresh look of the vinyl board. The squares are 2 1/4 inch and so are slightly larger than the 55mm squares of the Smartboard but it still works like a charm, even if I haphazardly place the pieces on the edge of the square.
Also I made this chess table out of an old Ikea stool. It spins around to adjust the height, so I use that to rotate the board. I screwed a plywood top to the seat to accommodate the board.
Happy chessing.
Can you share a pic of what’s under the vinyl? Thanks.

There you go, looks better in the picture than in real life. It’s the plastic Smartboard. Works perfectly on here now thanks to chessconnect.
Dont know why this site has flipped the pic.

I see. The vinyl roll up board is literally a skin overlay on top the plastic dgt smartboard?
Amazing you still have reliable and consistent piece recognition.
thanks for sharing the pic.
Now I want to try the thin mousepad roll up boards with the fancy wood grain designs that came out a few years ago. Would they work just as well over the dgt smartboard or the dgt veneer boards?

I should think to mousepad boards would work.

There could be problems with the mousepad boards: the pieces don't slide smoothly, this meas that the DGT electronics could "intercept" and "think" that you have completed the slide of a piece (say a bishop for example), while you're still dragging it to its final position. This would result in incorrect detection of piece movement. To avoid this, you should completely raise the piece and drop it on its final square. Personally, I don't like this way of moving the pieces on an electronic board, which is capable instead of handling sliding pieces.

The drag time if you are a dragger of the chess pieces and not a lifter. Can be adjusted I believe to avoid this issue if the default setting is too fast.
I'm a lifter. ;o) Of chess pieces. Nothing else.
