Check this thread @Krames, @magictwanger speaks highly of Oldset https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/high-quality-supplier-who-deserves-attention
Etsy / Oldset

Thanks Tank! I love the Latvian set, just sent a message to see if there are any options besides red to match w the black pieces . . .

Oldset has a stunningly beautiful Irish Killarney repro set I've been eyeing. It's been in my Favorites list for months now. Killarneys are among the rarest of the rare. It's got a spot in my "Top 5" if I ever win the lottery. Until then, a finely crafted Oldset repro may be the only option.

Not a fan of that thick glossy varnish/poly finish he applies... I hope he has other options.

I like Soviet sets but if that's the main theme of his store. I find it quite limiting.
It’s the main theme of many of the Etsy sellers in the countries of the old Soviet Union. It’s what they’ve got, and they are monetizing it. Sets from the West are pretty rare in the former Soviet bloc. What amuses me, on the other hand, are the sheer quantity of the sets posted on both Etsy and EBay that are identified as “rare.” Not so much…

I agree. Some of the "rare" sets look nice, but all seem to be really pricey. I don't know anything about Soviet sets other than what has been said in @Cgrau's blog about GM sets. Excluding GM sets I can't tell which are actually rare and which are not.
@MCH818, Really the only “rare” Soviet sets are the high quality professional level sets, which were usually weighted, and the pre-Revolutionary “Tsarist” sets. The real issue is discerning the difference between the early professional level sets and the ones made for the masses, which were usually unweighted or lightly weighted. @Cgrau and @Goodknightmike have done yeoman work in tracking down photographs of the sets in professional play and tried to categorize them. @Cgrau’s work in bringing what we call the Tal set back in to production with NOJ led to the discovery of several original Tal sets. That one is truly rare, at least in this part of the world.
Also, the prices of sets have skyrocketed so much that the new, well-weighted reproductions by several of the well-known Etsy dealers like Oldset and Kate’s husband at ERWoodLeathershop are very attractive to the casual collector.
Sorry I did not see this thread sooner.I was busy with tennis, fotball and boxing on T.V.....I was hit hard by my Maderna booster shot yesterday and couldn't move for 24 hours,so I decided to just veg out....Ha!
I ordered from Kate(her Tal pieces....superb) and more recently from Oldset(his 19th Century Alekhine's set).....Both are in the upper tier of quality sellers of sets and both offered outstanding service and communications....but....The set I got from Oldset is literally a hairs breath within the class of what my Noj set is....In patina, specialness and overall finish.
Don't get me wrong.....The set from Kate is stupendous, but not as Noj-ish.-
Have any of you ordered a set from the Etsy seller ‘Oldset’? I really like the look of some of that stuff. Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Ted
