EU/UK chess website?

So I'm considering buying from Chessgamesshop.com (specifically http://chessgamesshop.com/index.php?c=12&p=28) as they have reasonably priced chess sets and seem more reliable than kaoori chess which despite being a UK company is based in Armenia (according to my sources), however since I can't find many EU/UK websites selling chess sets I'm not sure what to think about the website (which also doesn't have an SSL certificate). I was wondering if anyone knows reliable, reasonably priced EU/UK websites that sell similar sets like the one I have shown above. Will not be responding immediately if I get any responses but will try my best to do so today.

Thanks

Within UK, you have

Official Staunton https://www.officialstaunton.com/

Regency Chess https://www.regencychess.co.uk/

https://chess.co.uk/

https://www.chessbaron.co.uk/

EU

(I had posted this in another thread so just doing a copy/paste)

Some of the Europe based shops are

First and foremost is of course is Noj Slovenia https://www.noj.si/

http://chessgamesshop.com

https://www.niggemann.com/en

https://www.connexxion24.com/

https://www.mastersofgames.com/

However just a few days back, I came across this interesting chess shop based in Italy, A lot of plastic chess sets and haven't seen some of these designs elsewhere.

Prisma Scacchi http://www.prismascacchi.com

Another store in Italy is https://www.scacchistore.it/

Thanks, I will look at these websites, I've seen some before but seems to me that chessgamesshop is the cheapest and seems to have a decent reputation at least. Nonetheless thanks for the websites I'll have to look through them.

Regency Chess in UK appear to have a good reputation in the past but recently have hit problems due to the Queens Gambit TV series.

They took orders and then ran into difficulties with supply, cancelling orders and stopped taking phone calls as they were all in the warehouse desperately trying to get sets shipped out in time for Christmas.

I was one of those who had a cancellation just before Christmas, couldn't get through on their phone lines and got no response to my emails. So I had a bad experience which put me off buying from them in the future.

Yeah I've seen so many websites largely sold out It's insane, regencychess seem like a very high end company and I don't have that sort of budget to buy as large a board from them as I intend to from another website, still a very good company though

To suggest to someone to order from NOJ who intended to order from chessgamesshop gave me a BIG laugh, LOL!

Chessgamesshop is a legit company, didnt have a prroblem with them. You might want to check their portfolio on eBay, too, cause sometimes their products are even a bit cheaper there still.

Thanks will do, for some reason didn't occur to me to check ebay as Amazon is pretty limited in options, if I can pay with Paypal the fact chessgamesshop does not have an SSL certificate shouldn't worry me as much

All in all probably won't order anything for now on second thought with Covid n all, since UK may be closing borders or something, probably best to buy after this is all over anyways thanks all for suggestions

Covid is one problem, but probably a bigger one right now is Brexit. The rules for trade between the EU and UK changed less than a month ago, and very few businesses were prepared (because the deal was done so late there was no time to). Moving anything across borders, especially where you're selling to an end consumer, has suddenly become subject to a lot more paperwork and tariffs.

So if you buy direct from an EU seller, you might get stung with additional charges and it will probably take longer to get to you than usual. And UK sellers are affected where they acquire their stock from European sources (a lot of boards come from Italy and Spain, and marble sets often use Italian stone).

Add to that the problems of Covid and the Queen's Gambit effect which has denuded stock held across the UK and this is a complete nightmare. So while businesses no doubt continue to need custom, and I don't want them to hurt any more than necessary, right now is probably the worst time to buy chess sets possible and I'd exercise caution in any purchases.

With any luck, in a few months the bureaucracy will have been worked out, the pandemic will have receded and the QG boom will have subsided slightly, and we can once more order with confidence.

Yes Brexit causing problems here too. Hubby ordered pair of running shoes and they have been delayed for weeks because of it. That along with COVID makes me reluctant too to order anything from outside UK.

Well, they're both reliable and they're both located in Slovenia. But yeah, I agree, they cater to different customers. Nevertheless, I'm probably one of the few here who own Dubrovnik sets from both places. Some may call it heresy but here's how I play them sometimes happy.png
