Amazing finding, Ron!! Those pieces are made of bakelite?
Thanks
. Mike told me the earliest ads for these appeared in chess review in 1950 so I think they could very well be bakelite. I was looking through the USCF Chess Review archive and found an ad for the Gallant knight set and they specifically say those were made of Tenite. Another early composite. I do know they have an almost translucent quality and I can see how they could be very easily .damaged.
Hi All. - Anyone who knows about these originals knows they just didn't survive in large numbers. But I was extremely lucky. Found a complete set and some extras. Some edge wear on the rook turrets.. But I could NOT pass up those boxes. VERY RARE. Cleaned up nicely and a set far too rare to use. Okay maybe problem solving
