Nice set, all the pieces seem to have a nice proportion to each other, like most vintage French sets. Is that Olive wood?
Fischer pic withe a glass eyed set ...
??? Just noticed the chess board is uneven "bumped" is this because it is a folding board... Sorry for the newbie/obvious question...

Hello Yes I have been told it is Olive and Rosewood pieces. The earlier sets were lacquered and the later ones were oiled.

Thanks . I am going by what the seller said on the height so fingers are still crossed. But the plus sign cross finial is a great indicator of a #6 size set as in the Chavet line. I will post a confirmation pic once it arrives.

Very beautiful, where did you find that?
Thanks . I got it from etsy. There was a very similar set on Frank's site and it sold for $395. Here is that 3.75" set and some history behind it ... https://chessantiques.com/product/french-glass-eyed-lardy-chessmen/

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
A very beautiful set with a special and still very clear design, a really good find -- I hope you'll share some pictures when you get them.

Thanks.Yes definitely another photo shoot as soon as it lands.
The eyes of the knights are a bit creepy but still, beautiful set, enjoy!
Thank goodness I wasn't the ***ONLY*** one thinking this way...
1st time I've seen a Chess set like this and the eyes... on those eyes... !! Still a rather nice set though... !!!
Here's my 3.75" set. Your knights seem a bit more stout than mine, and I definitely see some differences in the collars on the kings and queens. Not entirely sure if mine is cavalier or not. Would love your thoughts Ronbo!

Very nice Ron. I have collected every size Glass (Porcelain) Eyed Olive & Palisander Rosewood sets over the years but have never ran across the holy grail of the 4". They are truly the top of the line Lardys.

Beautiful knights !! From the King's finial I am guessing it is a German set? I know they made some with glass eyes.

Thanks . I am going by what the seller told me. Hopeful though. Even if it is "just" the 3.75" King it will be a steal for $80 lol. I will confirm to all once it arrives. Cheers
Hi All - I just found this BEAUTY yesterday. A wooden 4" King Lardy marketed in the U.S. by Cavalier circa 1970. This is the earlier lacquered version. Should be here soon. I remember a picture of Fischer with a similar glass eyed set. I think it was in someone's living room. Just can't remember who. Anyone have the pic
? Here is my incoming. Enjoy -Ron ...
