Pawnerai your turning into the equipment photography guru here. Very good ideas I never thought of doing those things but I'll definitely do it on my next photos of my chess equipment along with the patent pending Pawnerai Knight photography technique.

And Mike, isn’t this fun?

I'll take another photo, but I wonder if the colors have changed a bit because mine definitely isn't much more yellow.

Hey Ron, you had both in from of you. Are the colors similar? Did Dennis try to duplicate the Drueke linen board colors in vinyl?

Eyechess

Understand that before the thin mousepad boards, the one vinyl board I used with all my sets was the Legend Products one.  When I say it was more yellow, I don’t mean it was a lot yellow.  Now that I look at the above picture again, I see more of the yellow away from the flash reflection, especially at the edges.

I had tried a lot of vinyl boards and ended up with the Legend vinyl and as a relatively close second, the Deluxe vinyl board that The Chess Store once sold.  I felt the Legend colors gave me a warmer feeling.  And my various rosewood sets, the Ebonized ones and even my whitish Noj Maple pieces worked for me.  But I recall now using a vinyl board Shelby once made for the Noj pieces because the yellowish of the Legend was a bit much with the Noj pieces when I brought them to club to play.

Once the thin mousepad boards came out, that is all I used and still use.

I sent the Drueke board to Shelby for Mike.  I had a Legend board sitting nearby and just included it to see what Shelby thought and might come up with.

It’s a shame I can’t help with my Thinkpad W530 with the embedded color sensor using the Win10  Pantone color calibration app. It would nail the colors giving RGB values or Pantone color matching.

Maybe someone in the states has a W530 with the color sensor that could help? It would absolutely eliminate the guesswork

Makes sense (not a flash, but same difference): the upper right quadrant is the truest to what I see in front of me happy.png

I am excited to see what we can come up with.  I think it might be nice to take the base light square color and pair it with some nice rich colors like a burgundy or charcoal to see what else it pairs with.

Worst case scenario...I get a couple of one-off boards for my bag.  Who knows?  Maybe they can become a true product for my new line!

Love this kind of stuff.  you never know where the next true best seller can come from.

thanks

Blue would be a nice color.

Well, well, well.... what do we have here? Came home from running some errands and I find a tubular cardboard package sticking out from my mailbox. My custom printed thin mousepad (Flexpad) from Shelby @ amchesseq in Limited Edition Red&Black has arrived. No time for a game, but there's always time for a few quick pics.

Thanks Shelby!

Nice!

@ShelbyLohrman I'll buy one of those @Pawnerai red/black mousepad boards if you can add this to your customized mousepad tournament chess board product on your site.

Westsailor32

The original pics of the red & black board didn't grab me. The end result with the more muted red squares is something else

I think it's a combination of the muted red. And the dark charcoal grey instead of pure black. And the overall matte finish. I have it set up right next to a window. You can see the shine in the pieces but the board has zero sheen to it. It makes the pieces pop off the board. Even the black on black. I'm really diggin' it.

After spending some time with the thin mousepad in front of me, I'm 100% ok with the size of the notations. The notations are there as a learning tool. If there are notations, they should be seen and interpreted at a glance. No need to make it "pretty." This mousepad is not a showpiece board. It's a learning tool made fun with the bold Red&Black colors. It is what it is. A version with no notations will be AWESOME as well.

My 7 year old son approves of this board with 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

I will be airing it out in the basement overnight. And come tomorrow morning, we'll break it in with a game. I might even let him beat me. MAYBE. happy.png

Nice board from the childhood nostalgia era!

That does look fantastic.  Thanks for posting the finished pics!  I have more appreciation on how much it took to create this after Shelby's description on the work that goes into this.  Very interesting.

I did not even realize the difference until you mentioned it along with @Pawnerai. The muted red with charcoal gray and the matte finish is what makes it look great!

The new board is beautiful!  Maybe Shelby should create a special section on the website: "Nostalgic Modern" for these "new" designs based on old favorites.

Yep... you get the nostalgia of a red/black board without it looking so much like a checkerboard

ogbumblingpatzer

Agreed...that looks really good. I want one now!

Yeah, I’m excited to see some of these “new” old designs hit the shop.
