Nice. I'm always on the lookout for lesser known online shops. I'll come back to check on availability.
I particularly like the form of the below set, but I don't like how they use one stock photo for all the sizes. They used an 83mm stock photo for the 95mm listing.

I have been writing direct to the company who took over chavet chess men production. Pictures below off way they sent me.set inside is size 5 weight and felted as seen before on other post. The box is cool

I have sent Chavet numerous emails trying to get replacement pieces for a new Chavet No5 set that arrived to me in terrible shape. Leaning pieces. Loose weights. Terrible quality wood. I even translated the email to French. They never replied to any of my emails.

Sorry to hear it. I cannot answer on their behalf. I am huge fan of Jura and boxwood. I have heard about your set. Quality is not the same as it was.
I know Jura very well. You can't imagine how many people and business have closed down now. There are only two chess manufacturers in France now. Roz and Chavet.

A clearer shot of this very small set. It is quite heavy so a nice addition to my other small Lardy.
Just saw this thread popped up and I remembered your small sized Chavet set again mister Grey. It just so happened I received my small sized Chavet (KH 68mm) yesterday. This will replace my small sized Lardy set (KH 68mm also) for my travel set.
Interesting to see our small sets have quite some differences, just the rook is the same. Mine is also weighted but not that heavy like double weighted.

Gosh, I love this photo. Apologies if I missed a link or previous comment, but what size squares are these with the Chavet (KH 68mm) set? Is this set currently available anywhere online? Thanks!

It's a roll up wooden board (https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/local-finds). It's 1.375" squares. This is a vintage Chavet I found through local craiglist. The seller has no info unfortunately but I think it's a B206 judging form this thread https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/henri-chavet-chess-pieces-are-these-real-it-says-b206-set

I learned a lot about the Chavet chess set from this site (e.g., bit of its history) and those pictures posted of the pieces, with their simple but elegant design especially the Knight, I began hunting for the vintage ones earlier this year. I was lucky to be able to win/buy from online auctions but both are from France from 2 different sellers. One set has the 3.5 inch unweighted (don't know the series but this was the one with a bigger 'ball' on top of the Queen). But my favorite is the B207A (circa 1980s) with felted and weighted pieces. This B207A together with a custom-made Maple/Cherry chess board completes my own analysis set.

And mine from 1970 as well, also my favorite
I always love that board! The color always looks just right. There is some nice wear that a vintage board should have along with the patina to the wood squares.
Btw, it is true what they say. The grass is greener on the other side. I just realized the white pieces in my 70s set is white like the B210 I want and yours is more yellowish like my B210. I kind of like yours better. Yet I still want a lighter B210. I guess I just want what I don't have. Haha!

Lol since we're trading pieces (you and mister lighthouse) I'll trade you my green chavet set for your B210, there you have your green stuff 😉

Haha! That is funny.
@Pawnerai I like the size 5 for analysis.
Agreed. A size 5 (3.5"/90mm King on 2"/50mm sq Board) is a nice comfortable size. I actually play better OTB on the size 5 over size 6. Personally, I see the whole board better in my field of view. It's unfortunate that most manufacturers put less craftsmanship and detail in the smaller size 5. My modern Garbage Chavet No.5 set gets a lot of everyday use. No need to give them any special care. They go back into a loose pouch when done.
95-100mm pieces do have the heft and more presence for display. Can't argue there. It's nice to have different sizes for different occasions.
I believe a size 5 Chavet was used for the 2000 match between Kasparov and Kramnik. You can see some pics of it on Getty images. Kramnik preferred a smaller set so they went with this. I think that set even had a wonky rook, so customers aren't singled out for flawed pieces based on who they are!
I don't think they used a nº5 pieces for a WCC. The official recomendation of fide is nº6. Using nº5 when you can ask chavet for nº6 sounds really, really strange, mainly when players were (and are) used to playing with a nº6. Players have to approve the pieces size and design. It is well known that in Seville 87 karpov and kasparov asked to change one knight design.

It was definitely size 5. The shape of the bishops is easy dead giveaway.
Hello everyone,
I am writing this post to inform you that I have been the victim of a scam, and to warn you so that it does not happen to you.
The scammer is a seller called Wilson Levy, who lives in Agon Containville, France.
He currently sells through his shop "castorshopping" (when I bought it it was called "beavershopping") although he previously had another one called regencechess or something similar, which may have closed down due to some other fraudulent action.
As I had his contact details, I asked him about some chavet pieces he was offering, according to him, king size 9.3 cm. I made the payment, and he sent the pieces, which turned out to have a 9 cm king (I find it incredible that someone who sells chavet pieces does not see the difference in size with the naked eye, and check it, but I understand that we can all make mistakes).
When I contact him and tell him that I want to return the pieces, and that, because of this mistake, he should pay the shipping costs. His first response is not to agree to refund the money, and to play down the difference (I find it incredible for someone who collects and sells parts), but finally he confirms that he agrees and says he will reimburse me for everything.
I send the parts, but when he receives them, he refuses to pay the shipping costs, both there and back, in breach of his promise. After several emails, in which he refuses to pay them, I tell him not to be a scammer, and then he takes offence and refuses to refund any money at all, unless I apologise, and that he will not pay the postage in any case. Of course, I don't think I have to apologise to a thief and I didn't. In the end he refunded me some of the money.
In the end he refunded me some of the money, but refuses to take responsibility.
Total money ripped off €44.
Be very careful with this thief. He is useless and if there is any problem (generated by him or not), he will try to take your money.
I have already filed a complaint against him at my local police station.
p.s. He put the pieces up for sale again and again indicated that the king measured 9.3cm, which can no longer be attributed to a mistake, but to a deliberate act of deceiving the buyer to increase the price.

@Fer8799 He just posted a Chavet listing where he states the KH is 90mm. I don't know if he made a mistake earlier, but I think he's the type that is capable of manipulating things a bit in his favour. You can see from the Ebay reviews that he does not necessarily take responsibility when issues pop up either. Not sure calling him a scammer helped your case here (I don't think he falls in that category) but I do understand your anger - this guy knows how important a few mm is regarding to Chavet sets. What is also interesting to me is that he posted a zillion pics of the Chavet set, but none are showing the bottoms. From this I conclude that the set is not felted and weighted which he conveniently fails to mention as well in the description.
@broomstuck, the pieces that he has posted recently are not those I'm talking about. These are the pieces I was talking about https://www.ebay.fr/itm/275829808230
I didn't post it before, because I wanted to report it before to the police station, just to avoid any legal issue for posting his name here.
He was lucky the new buyer is probably the greatest expert in Chavet pieces, so he was able to recognise that they were nº5, although it is said the king was 9,3...
Re-reading this thread, *is* there a way to buy the Chavet No5 from them directly nowadays? I wouldn't mind buying two or three sets and creating an uberset of the best pieces from each box.
