Local finds

I see so many beautiful pieces here and I'm tempted by them (mostly looking at you mister Sound!). I don't have big pockets so I found a way to scratch the itch. I look for local finds but what you see mostly are mismatched sets: ugly pieces on beautiful boards or vice versa, or pieces are too big or too small for the boards. So what I do is trying to match a set from several finds.

I just received this 11" roll up wooden board yesterday, it came with a nice leather case. I matched this with Lardy pieces from 70's (KH 2.7"). The board and pieces fit in the leather case which makes a really nice compact and light travel set.

The roll up wooden board is funny btw, it can also be rolled up in another direction so basically they're just loose 64 squares glued on the fabric. Wait, on second thought I see glue residues on the sides, it could be that the glue got loose it is an old board after all.

Another matched set. A 1.57" squares board with 3.1" dogface set. Had a little work on this board, it had unevenly applied thick layer of varnish. Took some effort to sanded it down and applied new coating of natural oil.

Ah good to see you still keep going on! I just survive another round of layoffs so I'm saving some money more then usual but like you said, a man's gotta live. You said it right, you go girl!

I thought you would like the Lardy set? The king has hydrocapyplussomething head, thought you'd like that.

IpswichMatt

You did a good job with that board!

I hope your job situation improves, I've been made redundant a couple of times in my life and I know that it is no fun at all.

TheOneCalledMichael

Thank you mister Ips! Yeah it's a tough time for all of us. Buying this old beaten sets and patch them up gives me something to do. I have now few sets and started to think this is gonna go out of hands and I'm starting to think I should sell them and making a few bucks along the way is always nice. The problem is it's hard to let them go!

Hello, my name is the one called Michael and I have too many sets...

IpswichMatt

I think now is a good time to sell if you can bear to part with any.

Audioq

Very nice! I like those cheaper vintage boxwood sets as well. Not just for the price but also because they are normally very easy on the eye.

TheOneCalledMichael

It seems I'm the only one who likes to look around for local finds, well I got another one just came in happy.png

This is the smallest Chavet I have now, a complete boxed set. KH 61.42mm and the pieces are weighted and felted.

@TheOneCalledMichael Nice local finds! I hope your work situation turns out well.

@Sound67 I hope the same for you as well.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes thank you mister Mc! We're doing well, we stop buying sets so we're all good happy.png

@TheOneCalledMichael I am dying to find a nice roll up wooden board exactly like the one you pictured! Best travel design imo

Mister Mango, I happened to come across where they still sell this board new. Good thing I bookmarked them.

12" golden rosewood

12" padauk

Found this old board, crooked as hell but I love it. It's 45mm squares size, perfect for library size pieces.

The Small Collectors is so nice!

TheOneCalledMichael

Found this interesting dogface knights pieces, the pieces are quite elegant with their slim stems and kinda broad, flat bases. This set looks like French made. Kh is 82mm.

Dare I say it? Yes I dare! This is the Jaques under the dogface knights sets!

TheOneCalledMichael

Last two weeks I got these boards, 3x50mm squares and 1x 55mm squares. Cleaned them up
and a touch of oil to revive them.

and a Chavet 71mm ebonized.

TheOneCalledMichael

and another Chavet, 76mm with "Jeux Morize" labeled storage box.

Wits-end

Well done! I enjoy the repurposing process as well. Love to see wood restored to an appealing state again. That being said, somethings are just plain better with some scratches and dings. I like to there is a story behind each one of them. Thanks for sharing. Hope things improve for you soon.

TheOneCalledMichael

True mister Wits. It's just most of the boards I found, they had some varnish coating applied and I suspect it's done afterwards and not professionally judging from the look of it lol. More often then not I see those old boards have varnish coating, I guess it's the trend in that time.

I sanded them lightly with steelwool  0000 just enough to get rid of the varnish coating and touch of oil to maintain them.

Now you're here, do you perhaps know what board from the 3rd picture is made of? There is something strange about that board, when I was done sanding it down it was matte finish but by the time I want to put a drop of oil it was already kinda shiny. Is it because the nature of the wood that's it's oily?
