I noticed a chess engine by the name of Black Mamba has made the CCRL 40/40 top ten list. Later this evening when I get home I'll download it and add it to my collection. Has anyone tried this engine yet? If so, what do you think?
Free Chess Engine recommendation?
Stockfish is the strongest chess engine, runs on just about every hardware, is continually being improved, and is free.
you are all complete scumbags for using any software.the best way to improve is to actually play.you all say you want to "anilyze your game",but the sad fact is all of you use the software to play for you. shame on you,and shame on chess.com for allowing it. scumbags, all of you.
Wow, who peed in your Wheaties? Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?
I see why you're confused. Using an engine for study and cheating are two completely different things. Perhaps your anger is misdirected.
cbets, there are plenty of legitimate uses for chess engines, you are definitely barking up the wrong tree attacking people in this thread.
not at all. i looked over every link you guys provided.most if not all will actually play for you. 2 of them actually brag about their accomplishments in online tournaments. and although i cant prove it,id bet my life that most of the people looking for an engine use it to cheat, although they will say its to anylize a game. regardless, cheating is prevalent on chess.com. that much i can prove. funny thing though...ill get banned for calling cheaters what they are-scumbags,yet when i report cheating absolutely nothing happens. theres a handful of players(use that term very loosly here) who actually have their pages littered with warnings of cheating from other players, who i have reported repeatedly, and yet here they are, still destroying any credibility this site once had...
Mate, haven't you figured it out by now that the site has an automatic censore of curse words?
That's been like that for years on forums like this.
You sure sound like a paranoid man.

Yeah, that's why they're 1300 players *rolls eyes*.
Come on, Cbetz, get yourself together.
hey,i just see it differently. i dont see any use for an engine, not any legitimate one anyhow. any analyzing can be done from within chess.com. maybe there are some legit bennefits to software, but rather than attack me for calling you out, provide that info for me. correct me. as for the 1300 player, what does that have to do with it? programs play programs all the time here, just watch any game when you log on. sure, some of the higher rated players are legit, but i gather most are not. look at the blitz games being played with each side making instant moves. PERFECTLY PLAYED instant moves i might add. i watched a game yesterday where 26 moves were made in 6 seconds. thats impossible. even with premoves these guys would have a hard time accomplishing that. not to mention those pre moves would have to anticipate the opponent perfectly 13/14 moves out to make a game of it. i would like to know how being right makes me paranoid? or maybe the people who say that are just deflecting? but to say im paranoid about cheating? how could you play here and not see that? as for barking up the wrong tree here, maybe. i dont know any of you,and maybe my initial accusation shouldnt have been directed at the lot of you,yet on the other hand,i really cant see a need for a chess engine ,especially one that aids you in game...
You don't see a reason to use an engine. That's fine.
They do.
And as has been said, they use it to analyze games.
If they were cheating, they wouldn't be rated 1300-1400ish.
But instead of actually looking around, you're calling all here cheaters and all sorts of stuff.
Chill, mate.
P.S.: The 'paranoid' part was about how you get banned for cursing and you still don't see it that it's because of cursing, not cheatercalling. It was also a joke.
Take care.

can you share these uses with me? are there any that an engine offers that you do not have access to here? if so what are they? please share.thanks
The most simple of engines are a lot stronger than Chess.com's computer analyses.
Using a separate program that has access to any database and books you load into it, and making annotations and notes for yourself is also a lot easier than here.
That's two.

my answer would be especially 1300 players. what do they even know about analyzing a game? again,i shouldnt have grouped the lot of you together, but i havnt heard any reason to use an engine. especially one that is capable of moving for you in game. thats what im waiting for someone to justify...
Maybe that's why they need a tool to analyse?
Especially because they're 1300?
Don't be this dense, man.
I save my lost games and run my losing side through an engine, especially those moves that I wasn't sure about or which lost me an advantage. You learn more from a loss than from a win which is the same thing a paid chess coach will do to help you.
Bottom line is that ratings here mean absolutely nothing. It's what your USCF or FIDE rating is OTB that matters. Most of us use this site for practice only, and using an engine during play is not practice, it's cheating according to site rules. If I think I know someone is using an engine while playing me, I turn them in.

I have a number of engines and I don't cheat. I use it to look over finished games, and I play against them for fun. Nothing keeps you humble like getting your ass handed to you by Stockfish. I resent your assumption that everyone with an engine cheats. Every GM on the planet uses engines to examine positions. To teach. To figure out what went wrong over the board..... Are ALL GM's cheaters?
I've never heard of an engine that can move FOR you either.... Engines don't work by themselves. They need a GUI. And no program I've ever heard of can make moves for you here on Chess.com or any other online site.

this is false, and you know it. chessbudy(google it) for instance definitely moved for you on yahoos chess site. as did playbuddy. actually, playbuddy is still around since yahoo chess closed because there are different versions of it that play all the pogo games for you. i didnt download any of the software mentioned above,so i cant say for sure that it moves for you,but at least 2 of them advertise such,or at least imply such. bottom line,if playbuddy can sync with yahoo chess, then other software can do the same here. how its done,i have no clue.im not a program creator. what i do know, for fact,is making instant moves without some type of assistance is impossible. pre moves would be the only legit way to accomplish this, and even then you would have to be a special type of grandmaster to string along 15+ perfectly played assumtions of what your opponents next string of moves will be. i play only 10 minute games. so when i play someone who has moved 15+times in under 10 seconds(while destroying me by the way),should i assume they are some type of grandmaster savant? now when i play 4 or 5 games in a row like that,am i just unlucky enough to have faced the 5 greatest players on the planet? add to that their ratings are never above 1700 and i think its safe to say the answer to both questions is no. therefor, the only logical explanation is cheating. am i wrong for seeing it this way? actually,no need to answer. that was a rhetorical question...
Can you post a few of those games?
I've heard some guy call others cheaters only to realise that the top engine moves his opponents made were all forcing and anyone could obviously see them.
I really don't think that there are as many cheaters at your level as to meet 5 in a row, so I'm remaining skeptical about your statements.
Except, of course, if you were just using exaggeration to emphasise your points.

-To play against at different levels. Lucas Chess has a rated section with opp from 800 to 3300;
-To test you opening/endgame skills. If you play the first 10~20 moves against a top engine and the position are still equal, you're doing fine in terms of development, space control, etc...and engines with tablebases are perfect players (on the endgame, of course), so you can test your habilities with them and review your moves later;
-To analyze your games. With a proper software you can evaluate the whole game or the variations you calculated before, generate score graphs, calculate your average error, etc. And yes, the tools outside chess.com are way better.

thats fine.doubt all you want. your opinion on the subject is irrelivant as stated earlier. ive been playing chess a long time and am well aware of when im playing a person or a program. as someone else stated, stockfish will move for you. thats all the proof i need to validate what ive said. saying im wrong because you dont believe in it doesnt matter. i never lie,i never cheat, and have never exaggerated anything. to be fair, you dont know me so doubting me is acceptable. all of this back and forth doubting does nothing to address the issue of cheating. you say it doesnt exist, and i say its prevalent. you can doubt me all you want, but blind yourself to the obvious is absurd. try experiencing life outside your bubble for once. except,of course, if youre blindly ignoring the obvious to hide your own guilt regarding the topic...
I didn't call you a liar. I was just saying you may be overexaggerating to make your point come through. That wasn't to call you out.
Don't overreact.
I'm just saying there's not a probability that at your level you're meeting 5 of them in a row.
Top that with your refusal to post said games, and of course I'll doubt it.
I've been here quite a time myself, yet never seen one.
And your trying to insult me at the end is just pathetic and completely uncalled for.
Just look at my ratings and games.
Yeah, I'm obviously a cheater and am just defending them, hurr durr.
I was just geniunely curious, yet you go about jumping at people's throats in an instant.
Stockfish is better than Rybka.
They are both fish.
Literally!
Figuratively!!
