@Mr-Endron,

I took the liberty of editing your photo to better highlight the contrasting woods in the knight.

Save this hi-res image to your desktop and enlarge it on your screen to really see the marked contrast between the knight's pedestal base, clearly ebony, versus the upper body. Note the surrounding pieces as well.

To my eyes, old though they may be, the head of this knight is not ebony.

I, too, am interested in this HOS set. It seems quite nice. However, if all the ebony sets are like this one -- not entirely ebony -- I'm less interested.

I'd be interested in learning how this happened, that the head of the knight is not ebony (assuming I'm correct).

I urge you to pursue this with the House of Staunton. I believe you are entitled to two new EBONY knights.

If you pursue a remedy to this, please share your experience. The outcome will help me to determine whether I place an order for this ebony set when it becomes available again. Others may also benefit from your experience with the HOS.

As an aside, this is an excellent photo illustrating the difference between ebony and ebonized pieces. For those just learning, note that the brown-colored ebony when seen with the naked eye under normal everyday lighting will appear black. Only when lighted with an unnaturally bright light such as a camera flash will the brown appear. This is normal with the ebony commonly employed today, which my reading indicates is Ceylon or East Indian ebony, which is naturally very dark brown. The ebony wood on your set appears just like my HOS Sultan ebony set when I shine a very bright light on the pieces. In normal lighting, they appear black.

Thanks, I hope this has been helpful, and in any case that's a nice set you have.

That set is $749 and maybe a 20% discount if you used a code. Did you pay $600 + shipping which I am guessing was a small fortune to Australia?  If you paid $200 + shipping then you got ebonized boxwood.

It's very possible you are correct, but I'm curious what the shipping price has to do with it.  It's either a mistake or intentional...I hate to believe the second since HoS has a very good reputation.  They should make it right.

Shipping price had nothing to do with it. I wanted to know what they paid for the set itself.  If $200 it's ebonized, if $600 it's ebony.  JJ never posted back?

I am sure the Austrailia Post Office has postal weight scales. Simply weigh at least a King, Queen & Rook. If its real Ebony these pieces will weigh more than the boxwood counter parts.! It does look like ebonised boxwood to me in which case you got ripped off unless a shipping mistake was made. Why you Austrailians like to pay huge shipping costs instead of buying from Chess Bazaar is beyond me.?

After further searching it appears I purchased an ebonized set ( although thinking I was buying ebony as this is only type advertised on website in this style and size) It was a hos eBay item Thanks for help guys I have contacted HOS they are working on replacement. Will let you know In terms of postage etc, I really like the HOS sets. I feel that the designs are superior to chess bazaar (my opinion!!!) and as such prefer them. This is my 4th set from there. Other 3 ebony and I am very happy . One eBay the other two full price

Couldn't it still be dyed? The OP's piece was light in the middle.

Hi guys

on my previous set I probably bought a bargin too good to be true. It is interesting however the brown of current ebony. I paid full price for a sinqufield HOS set (yes yes no comments about chess bazaar etc) and the ebony pieces are brown, even in normal light. the comment from HOS was that is what ebony is.

the above photo is of the sinqufield set and an 1856 jaques set.

maybe it has come to point of not claiming genuine ebony as it is no longer available????

thanks guys
