I get the message when I run compatibility mode process
Do I type this into the search bar, or is it a menu item?
When I go into the CM 9000 desktop icon properties, (Compatibility tab), the default selection is "(Windows XP Service Pack 2)", but the selection box (i.e., Run this program in compatibility mode for) isn't even checked on. I suspect that DirectPlay is handling this?
Did that. Dunno about dierct play. MAYBE if a RESET MY PC? I dot wanna do that if I do not have to...

I don't know anything about Resetting the PC. I don't even know what that would do.
Btw, I just downloaded and ran Geek Uninstaller to remove all traces of the CM 9000 install (even registry entries, etc.) Then I ran the CM 9000 install again, and it's still installing just great.
@EsherehcsE - Am I right in thinking that you've got Chessmaster 9000 working on Windows 10?
I'm slightly confused because your earlier post said you're on Linux

Yes, my main PC now runs Linux Mint, but I can also use this PC to boot into a separate Win 7 hard drive (no longer connected to the internet).
I also have a separate old Dell PC that I set up for fun that's running Windows 10 Pro. I don't really use it on a daily basis - It's just there to play with if I need to do anything Windows related on the internet. This old Dell Windows 10 PC is the one that I got CM 9000 running on.

OK, now I know what resetting the PC does - yeah, that's a major step. If it were me doing it, I'd make a clone image first before resetting, so that I could go back if things went south. I use Clonezilla - not very user friendly, but it *always* works (if you can figure out how to use the interface, lol). Some people like the commercial Acronis True Image, and I guess Windows has a method to clone an image. But I haven't always been able to get Acronis or the Windows image to work right. (The only disadvantage of Clonezilla is that the target drive has to be at least as large as the source drive. Acronis doesn't have this limitation.)
Meh. Resetting PC (with the save (only) My Files hopefully will undo anything that may have been done inadvertently by SOME process or other. It's just a major pain reinstalling my programs. I call that a bargain if it works. I have already backed up my system and could restore from that if needs be if the new reset did not work. Just have not got the time just now. Perhaps I try in the morrow. MAYBE someone between thix and then will post another solution?
Just a couple of thoughts -
Have you verified that you have a recent version of DirectX?
Are you running any AV other than Windows Defender?
Dxdiag says all is ok and I am running dx 12.
Ok, I figured as much, but it was worth checking.
So far, everything in CM 9000 that I've tried has worked. I'm running a short tourney right now between two personalities. The voice moves are working. Played a game against CM and one against Josh in the kid's section. A few drills, lessons, classic games database. Everything works as far as I can tell. If you have anything specific you want me to try, let me know.
I just LOVED the tourney feature! It's great to have a blitz tourney of say 10 personalities and just sit there and watch! Really. That feature, and the Newspaper 3 d is all I ask for!
A bit of an update - Because of the goofy glitch with the "Settings" icon in the task bar during my first install of CM 9000, I decided to try the procedure a second time to see if the glitch was repeatable. So, I reloaded the original Build 1909 image onto my test hard drive and made the Build 20H2 update with the Windows Media Creation Tool. After that, the only things I did were to "Check for updates" and make sure Windows was up to date, and I also enabled DirectPlay.
Next, I put Disk 1 of CM 9000 into the CD drive and waited for the CM 9000 window. This time, when I clicked on the "Install" button, the install proceeded normally. No glitch like the first time - InstallShield started right up, and the installation went just as expected.
So, the glitch only happened the first time, and it didn't repeat. Yay!
I still have not reset my PC . Will do so when I am able to spend some quality time to work on this issue. No doubt my wife will then threaten divorce..... Ah well. I'll still have my queen! Watching Queen's Gambit regards -Nimzowits.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out with the problem - but it looks like you may have to figure out the rest of it on your own. Of course, you could always do a fresh install and have to reinstall and reconfigure everything, haha. (Hopefully a restore will fix it.)
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........
