Hi all,

restarted my interest in chess after a few years break. Now I'm teaching my 7 year old daughter and spending some quality time there.

I want to buy some nice pieces, later on I can get a quality board maybe.

So so far, settling on of these two:

1) 3.75" 1849 Jaques/Nathaniel...love the distressed white, the Rook is nice, the brown is a darker shade looks awesome

2) 4.4" Wellington... Knight is superb, pawn's look good

I can get either one same price.

Any recommendations, I'm thinking if I get the 3.75'' will eventually pair with 60mm, for the 4.4'' maybe 60 maybe 65 mm later on.

thanks

Designwise it's of couse entirely up to your personal preference so I'll not comment on that.

I play daily games with my 10 and 12 year olds and if you intend on using your new set ever at home (if your daughter is a couple of years older) I would advise against anything larger than 3.75". My bigger sets almost never get any play at home because they are just not practical. In fact, 3.5-3.6" sets get chosen by the kids almost exclusively.

Simpler designs are better for practical play - especially for teaching young kids. Of those two, go with Jaques style.

I’d go with the Jaques. The Wellington is too big for practical use and the design, for my personal preferences, is inferior. The Wellington is just too “extra.”

4.4” is huge. 60mm squares are probably too big for a 3.75”. 55mm is probably what you want. UCSF recommends dividing the diameter of the base of the king by 0.78 to find the approx square size.

None of them are suitable for everyday play and use. You can go for Zagreb/Dubrovnik or Fischer-Spassky sets which are perfect for tournament and everyday chess!
