Check out this post from @RussBell. He has links to several good blog articles that he has written, but you will be especially interested in his articles Good Chess Books for Beginners and Beyond and Good Chess Openings Books For Beginners and Beyond.

For my own suggestions, I'd recommend Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess (for basic tactics), Irving Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move (for understanding opening principles), and Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess.

Two very good books and enjoyable to read.

Weapons of chess by Bruce Pandolfuni is a great book. It goes picture by picture. It talks about strategy and tactics. If you want to do opening study look up Derrick Kelley on YouTube and learn the openings he talks about. If you do not get the middle game plans, avoid that source or line they suggest.

Lots of good chess books from the Old Masters (Capablanca, Lasker, Reti, etc) have had their copyright expire and are now in the public domain... it is perfectly OK to download them for free.

Project Gutenburg has Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals, as a free download.

Is the book "How to Beat Your Dad" not good? My dad just bought that book.

It's a very accessible book of mating patterns with basic explanations and a few diagrams and examples for each. It could be considered an accessible version of Renaud and Kahn.

Get my book. It's a roadmap to everything I did to go from beginner and now maxed out at 2600 blitz. It includes what my training journals and protocols looked like. How I learned to develop skill. How to study the opening effectively either from books or from videos without being overwhelmed. Improving emotional intelligence and taking a more rational view on losing in chess. The books that I read to get some forms of theory out of the way.

I can't post the link here to avoid spam. But check out my profile on the web-version of chesscom or simply DM me and I'll send you the Amazon link.
