Help identifying a very attractive vintage chess set

Sort:
dorusah

Here's some pics of a vintage unknown set (Soviet?). The pieces are not weighted, and have same finish wear, but I like this time patina very much! Kings measure 3.62" (9.2cm) in height. Pawns with a height of 1.96" (5cm) are very robust. The Knight have the ridge carved only one side. The square have 1.85" (4.7cm), a little small for these pieces. I bought this set from market and I want to find out more information from the experienced person, such as: the period of time, the country of origin, or any kind of information about this chess set. Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure, but the Knights and also the Rooks reminded me of a set I just saw posted in this section, the Soviet Grossmeister set.

EDIT: No, my memory was playing tricks on me. They are not similar at all.

That is a fantastic set. Nice find. Someone will be along to help, many knowledgeable folks here.

My opinion - the pieces match the board nicely. I have a couple of older sets with board from the Soviet era (not necessarily Soviet Union) and they are a little crowded also. I believe that is the way they made them/played. I have a pic somewhere of two older gentlemen playing in a eastern European coffee house and the board is what would be considered crowded.

Looks like a German Bayerwald set. How tall are the kings?

3.62, I missed that before. The Bayerwald Sets I’ve seen all have finished crosses on the kings. The front and back cuts haven’t been made on these, though that’s not unheard of in a German set. I have one.

Thank everyone for the information!
cgrau,
I saw your Bayerwald set presentation and I liked it a lot! here https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/bayerwald-set-of-the-1960-leipzig-olympiad?page=2
Yes, looks very much with Bayerwald but only in the general lines. The Bayerwald has a more robust design, and my set has a slimmer silhouette (that's why I think they are kind a Russian set however). And especially the Rooks and tha Pawns are quite different!
The basis of my pieces is more spherical than Bayerwald remembering more your "My # 4..." from here https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/which-vintage-soviet-russian-set-do-you-like-the-most2?page=3 and #100 (below) from here https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/which-vintage-soviet-russian-set-do-you-like-the-most2?page=5
Your chess sets collection is very vast and very helpful for identifying sets! Thank you very much for your opinion, this being a serious beginning point in my seeking!

I think this set: https://fotob.agerpres.ro/foto/detaliu/10353886 is very similar. Queen is almost same, bases of pieces are very similar(except knights), small ball on bishop is painted black, king with unfinished cross etc. I would say this two sets was probably made by same manufacturer.

mgyuri73,

Similar overall!! But the king, the pawn, the queen, the rook are different. My set has a longer silhouette proportion. Thank you very much! Such help is very useful to me anyway!

Those are very beautiful chess pieces. I love them especially the Knights.

Thank you, yes is a very beautiful set. But the  origin of this set still is a mystery for me.

Does anyone know anything about these chess set? Thank you!

I've seen a very similar set on Etsy recently. The light pieces were made of a different wood but the pieces looked exactly like the ones in your pictures. I had a short interaction with the seller and the only thing he could tell me that the set was made to order in Kiev.
