I love #2, I have a set very similar to it that I'll never part with.

I find set #1 the most elegant overall. Bet it is quite tippy, though. I always wondered about why most of the old Russian sets aren't weighted... it's pretty windy out on the steppe!

I think the set is fine for slower clock games, but not so much for blitz play

# 1 hands down

How about # 5?  A young GM Yuri Averbakh playing with a very nice Russian set.  Picture probably from late 40s or early 50s. Check out those awesome Bishops!! And those tall somewhat crudely carved Knights, but still very appealing.

I like #5

I own sets like one and four. I am partial to four. Pictures to follow.

Re #5, the proletarian pawns rule the board!

Here's my favorite Sov. set--very rare. I wish I could entice someone to reproduce it.

# 5 is awesome. I also like its "proletarian" or, who knows, "Philidorian" pawns...

Hey Chuck, can you post some pics of your #1 set?

cgrau

I will take some pics of my #1 this weekend. Meanwhile, here are the seller's shots of the #3 I just picked up.
