Try checking Ebay. Pretty tough to find a wooden board and pieces for around $100 even used unless it's a small portable. Lots of nice plastic tournament sets available with a vinyl, mousepad, or silicone board for $40 or $50. Happy Ebay browsing; I usually use "Staunton" as a filter in my search since I don't much care for theme sets. If you don't mind a theme set however you might be able to find something under $100. If you want wooden Staunton you might have to shop for awhile....

I agree. A set and (wood) board together for less than $100 limits the choices severely, even on eBay. If a vinyl/silicone/mousepad board would suffice, it gets a bit easier.
Probably my favorite set in the under $100 range is the HoS "Grandmaster;" nice lines and proportions, good balance and reasonable heft. It's attractive, stable, and feels good in the hand.
I just bought an old set on ebay...its called imperator edition III. Its the set i grew up with and learned to play with. I am biased, but i loved that set, i lost it in a house fire and have been looking for it for a long time. I also googled the imperator set and found a result for a set made in India, looked nice, dont know the cost. Hope this helps and good luck in finding an awesome set!
Wow. I just checked out the imperator staunton set made in India and it is expensive( $429), nice set though. Ebay is the way to go if you dont mind used.

I have had several chess sets and down to 3 chess sets. I use them for different reasons. I always had one at home i will play with friends that really know how to play a good game. Have another to play with other friends that just want to beat me at a game when they visit.
I used to have a minature magnetic set which i could travel with and play wherever i could meet my friends. My current set i use to anaylze games is a wooden magnetic set that also allows one to play backgammon and hold all the pieces when closed.
None of my sets have cost more than $10 but 2 of them do not look it. The one i have from High School for tournaments and Chess/Backgammon set.
I always wanted a Marble set but i just would hate to lose a single game playing on that set. Nobody and i mean nobody beats me at anything if you are a visitor. Home field advantage. Sorry back to topic. Just love to play. I play on a checker board ($1) and take out my bag of chess pieces for a tournament(actual the back up set i have 2 sets). Even found a site how to make a set out of paper. Me i say save the money for books or ask for it as a gift and have them search and save your energy for playing a game.
I would recommend looking on ebay as well. I got a quadruple weighted tournament set (plastic pieces, but very heavy and well-made) with a vinyl board for $28 after shipping. I really love how the pieces feel when I pick them up, and I'm super happy with my purchase. You could use the extra money to save up for a nice chess clock and you'll be set.

I got one of these recently. Very nice board to play on but certainly not portable. It's the type of set you leave set up, though it does come with a nice case. The board itself feels very heavy and the pieces are nicely weighted.
Only £80. Got it on a whim because it liked the look of it.

I have a few chess sets and the pieces that are my favorite are the tall sets, over four inch in height. If you can get a taller set, go for it. Weight is very important so take the sets weight into account.
For one hundred with a board, you're not going to get a very nice set of pieces or board.
