@WalterBiensur
I am hoping that this set 'LeTanneur' fits your Chavet family description.
I am hoping that it is interesting to you as thanks for all the work you've put into your love of Chavet.
I was lucky to get this as my first glass eyed knight set.
I will take better photos if you wish.

I am back, wow what a Bible. That's a great thread. So I guess the above pieces are Chavet 253/8 made by the cooperative?
I also learned that one piece knights with glass eyes are also Chavets.

Merci ! That's right: a 253/8 from Chavet ;-)

The functioning of the cooperative would still deserve some research and explanations. The organization of work around chess sets in Dortan is really particular. But there is no doubt about the origin of your set.

Thank you!
I confirm that the set is indeed from Chavet (size 3-4), made in the 70s.

Le Tanneur is more of a manufacturer of travel luggage, including toiletry bags, renowned in leather goods and therefore offered leather boxes with Chavet sets. It still exists.

Other distributors, such as Rachez, did the same thing but with less luxury (cardboard assembly, red background).

@WalterBiensur

I just wanted to check with you if this queen has the water drop effect of pre 70's Chavet? The rooks look a bit tapered. Or is that kings cross not the right look? I cannot tell if it's Lardy or Chavet. I can also ask seller for better pics.
I'll delete post it if it's Lardy.

It reminds me a lot of the "old queens" (60-70) size 5 ;-) I have a few of them

Thank you so much for your help again. I cannot help but feel a warm fuzzy pride that I picked that Chavet set.
This is great news as it's a super deal and It comes with an old book too, my own very first chess book.
I'll pull the trigger on it. I just hope they'll post.
I'll also go look up this B. Scriven guy...

Just by chance did Chavet stamp boxes with: 26 . 5

It's the last hope I have of this guy being a Chavet...

I have never seen this kind of inscription on a box.
For the Regency, the feeling that it is recent, even more recent than the one on the left (50-70)… like an imitation. The way it was machined doesn't seem ancient or French to me at all.

So most likely a modern repro then... your word is good enough for me. That would explain it's almost flawless finish, they were in such good shape.
Thank you for putting that to rest once and for all.

is there a difference between a real chavet and this abercrombie edition?

Avatar of Walterbiensur

Except for the storage box, they are both real. Here it looks like a size 4 from the mid 80s

Avatar of pontpierre

the box is very nice but i think size 4 is very small. did abercrombie make a bigger chavet with a storage box?

"Abercrombie & Fitch c1980s Chess Set"

As luck would have it, if you look on eBay you will currently see the same set.

Enclosed Case Sz: 8 3/4" x 10 1/4"L x 3 3/4". I won't say anything about the price...

I don't think is big enough for a size 6 ;-)

This link to another one size 4.

I don't know Abercrombie & Fitch very well to be able to answer that.

Hi @Walterbiensur ! Is this French set? King is 85 mm.

is the storage case box big enough for size 4? maybe 18 3/4'' x 10 1/4'' x 3 3/4'' can hold it

Avatar of Walterbiensur

Here are the ones I have almost no doubt about. Then a comparison of Chavet 6 with another Chavet. And finally 2 knights that you can take as a reference point in relation to yours.
Length and finish of the mane - look closely at the ears and the work that is done.

The set that you show me makes me doubt a lot about a French potential... it lacks something... a copy? I don't feel the same thing at all when looking at it. Same effect with the other pieces - the slot of the bishop too little marked - the crown of the queen the bare minimum of work - then the cross of the king which is not in the usual standards...

Yes, it is suitable for a size 4 set, but frankly, for that price, I can sell you 10 sets in size 4. The Didatto brand and Dal Negro (Italy), also worked with Chavet and offered Chavet sets with storage and the chessboard covered the pieces (you can't fold it).

Up to size 6 (but this is very rare) - more common in smaller sizes and much cheaper.
