If it's DOS, you might need a DOS emulator like DOSBox. I use it under Windows 7 and it works quite well. I don't remember if XP runs DOS programs well or not.
How do you get fritz2 to work in windows xp?

Oh, wow. Thank you so much. I'll try it out and let you know how it goes. :)

Fritz 2: Whew!!! Bet that would sell in antiques at a good price on an auction site.
Played an early fritz like that believe it was 4 or 5 and it looked fairly strange. Unloaded quite fast and continued on with my other collection of fritz's.
I know you can get fritz 9 on amazon for $5.50. Old interface but covers all the database functions ect.

Fritz2 was a DOS program (released in 1992!)* and won't run under XP unless with a DOS emulator like the aforementioned DOSBox. It's not likely to interface with Arena at all -- IIRC Arena is Windows-based and came along much later.
* To give you an idea how old it is, Fritz2 was released about four months after I got my start in the chess software business. Another little Fritz2 fact -- it's the only Fritz engine (aside from the 0.x beta) which was never ported to Windows; Franz Morsch lost the original source code in a hard drive crash back in the 1990's.

Oof. I would suggest throwing the floppy disc across your yard, and bucking up the cash for fritz 12 at least. Just think to yourself what it would be worth for you to have a Grandmaster available 24 hours a day to analyse your games. Try calling Magnus at two in the morning and handing him your scoresheet to go over. Analysis is only one of many many many features this program offers. It was well worth it to me.

Hey that fritz has some antiquity value. Handle with care. Maybe the guys over at chessbase will give you free megadatabases or something.

Fritz 2 is available for free download online. I uploaded the Dosobox and still can not get it to work for the life of me. I even fallowed a step by step tutorial on how to load games into dosbox off youtube and still no luck. Some people have commented on obtaining a newer version of Fritz. I want the old Fritz because it is the most aggressive chess engine ever. Thank you all for your responses. I'm looking forward to see more post about this iconic and mysterious chess engine.

More current versions of Fritz can be had for $10 or so at Target-plus there are plenty of free engines out there which will interface with Arena.
Second the motion. Look in amazon for cheap versions of Fritz 11:
http://www.amazon.com/Chess-Base-Fritz-11/dp/3866810520/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1304176698&sr=8-16 and Fritz 10:

PS: Fritz by Chess Base and Fritz Chess by Viva Media both appear to be the same thing, Fritz Chess includes older versions of Fritz.
After you buy one of these infinitely superior versions (because they will work under XP if nothing else) you can also download 3 free, awesome chess engines and use them with Fritz: Houdini, Firebird and Stockfish. I am incapable of believing that the antiquated Fritz 2 can play "more aggresively" or more anything else than any of these engines. That's kind of like saying a Model T has more horsepower than a Corvette!

There really isn't fritz 2 has except that it was an original fritz which often times has monetary value but no skill value.

To run all my DOS programs under DOSBox, I set up a directory on my hard drive called DOS in which I put all the folders containing all the different DOS programs. To run DOS under DOSBox, you have to mount the drives you want to use. In the DOSBox configuation file, at the very end you can add lines to act like a batch file. So what I did was put in mount c c:\dos. This makes the DOS directory appear as the C:\ directory when I run DOSBox. Then I can use the cdir command to go to the directory of whatever program I want to run (actually, I use an excellent DOS-based menu program called Access, and have even set up Windows 3.11 to run under DOSBox).
So to make it easy, make a folder called "DOS" on your hard drive (assuming it will be the c: drive), then make another folder inside that one called "Fritz2" or whatever, then put the Fritz2 program in that folder. Put "mount c c:\dos" at the end of the DOSBox configuration file in the DOSBox folder, and then run DOSBox. Oh you may have to put in "cdir c:\" on a line after the "mount" command, which will get you to the c:\> prompt. If you are going to use DOSBox only for Fritz2, then you can instead put "cdir c:\fritz2" (or whatever you named the directory that Fritz2 is in), then under that put the name of the .exe file used to run Fritz2. Save & close the configuration file, then run DOSBox and it should automatically come up with Fritz2.

The only issue I have with DOSBox is that under Windows 7 it only allows one configuration file. What I wanted to do was to run each DOS program through a different icon on the desktop with a different DOSBox config file, but that didn't work. So I found the Access program and just bring it up and run all my DOS programs from it.

Well if nothing else some of the posts here look informative for anyone wanting to run a DOS program under XP, although I still maintain it's a waste of time and effort for Fritz 2.

I have Chessmaster 2000 and 2100 as well as various other old DOS chess games that I run under DOSBox, though I don't play them very often.

I was able to get Fritz 2 to work in DosBox (Windows 7). I couldn't find the Fritz 2 download from this site, so I used the download from Ed Schroder's site:
I also use the D-Fend Reloaded front end for DosBox, which makes using DosBox a lot easier. (Schroder also has a link to D-Fend Reloaded.)
At first, I couldn't get the program to run in DosBox, until I discovered the secret. There's an Install.bat file in the Fritz folder. If you run that file, it will try (unsuccessfully, I think) to copy some files, and then it will delete itself. It seems that the Fritz2.exe file must first check to verify that the Install.bat file is not present before it will run. (I verified this a second time by not even running the Install.bat file, but instead just manually deleting it.) So, first delete the Install.bat file, then Fritz should run. The Install.bat file tries to copy the a00-e99.cpb file from the Match folder to the Books folder, so I guess it would be a good idea to do this manually.
One final remark - For such old software, it looks like a pretty snazzy program.
I'm trying to get this Fritz2 to work and it won't play in Arena? I am clueless. Any Help would be great. :)
