How to Play Chess Endings by Zonosko Borovosky Dover Publications
This is a great book that teaches the amature or beginner how to think logically and clearly in the endgame, analyze position and form a correct plan the emphasis of the book is on understanding the principles of the endgame rather than memorizing lots of moves and variations (like the openings) if you master Borovosky's techniques you'll be able to apply them to any situation in the endgame.
Why get this older book? it's a steal at $7-10 dirt cheap compared to more expensive books that cost $25 plus the shipping your practical endgame knowledge will be at a high level if you really work through it from front to back. For Rook Endings (very important) there are other books that will cover everything you should know on that Nunn's recent book is recommended.
The book is in descriptive notation.
