Very nice acquisitions! I have the HOS ebonised version, but I like the golden rosewood better after seeing your pics. Thanks
I get it now....Dubrovnik sets rock!

So as to compare apples to apples, I'm posting the approximate angle pic for the Ebonized Dubrovnik set, as was for the Golden Rosewood set. These pieces sit on the palisander, 2.25" (squares) board.
Beautiful set!

I received this email today.
New Dubrovnik design from Chess Bazaar. It's available here:

I just played Monday night in our G/30, d/5 club event with my Noj Dubrovnik II in Walnut set. It was no less than wonderfully excellent (Dude!).
The broad bases and design and workmanship of this set is GREAT. And I have to say that this may very well play better than any Staunton set.
I see that CB is now selling the above set for $200 US. Well, that is now the same price as HoS. And even with the improvements CB has done, the HoS set is still a more accurate reproduction in design to the original and the current Noj sets, understanding that none of them come close to the Noj.
From the OP pictures of his HoS Dubrovnik, I'm actually considering getting their ebonized version to complement my Walnut and Red ones from Noj.

Well, the listed prices at Chess Bazaar have never been the real prices. Right now they are selling everything with a flat 25% off. So the actual price any sane person will pay for the set is 149.99.
Chess Bazaar has free shipping as well, and House of Staunton does not. That will add another $10-20 to the price.
So to say this set is the same price as the HOS set is a bit inaccurate.

Well, I just checked with HoS and when they have a sale, combined with my Collector Club discount, their prices are less expensive also. And HoS always has 10% off with a code that is available on the internet.
So, if I were to buy the HoS set which retails for $199 at a 15% sale, I would actually get that set for $152. And shipping on that set would be $12, so I would pay $164 for the HoS set. And for the better quality design as is evidenced by the pictures on this forum along with the happy campers posting here that already own a HoS Dubrovnik, I feel it easily worth the extra $15.

There is this chess set being sold as a Dubrovnik.

Felted and weighted (but only slightly) from Slovenia. $77. Well...it's from the right part of the world, and it does pretty much resemble a Dubrovnik set. But there are huge divergences and they for sure don't look as stable. Still, somewhat interesting chess men. I've sent a message asking if they can sell a set with a ball top for the King.
In case you are wondering, this set will not qualify for Chess Bazaar's guarantee to meet a competitor's price. (I tried).

Jack, I have it on very good authority that the original design sketches for the Dubrovnik included alternate designs for the kings' finials. One showed the ball we're all familiar, but the other showed a cross, as depicted here. The Yugoslavian government, I am told, rejected the cross design because of its religious connotations. So, to borrow from Goodknightmike's thread about quantum chess, what we have here might be described as a Quantum Dubrovnik, the Dubrovnik that exists in a parallel quantum universe. The Schroedinger's cat of Dubrovniks, if you will. I actually have one of these. It's not all that unstable, but when I want to play with a Dubro, I use one of my NOJ, CB, or HOS sets.

How do you find the removable finials on the kings on the HOS set? Was a little worried I'd just lose them right away - or are they fairly tight?

Very nice sets, nvpliers! Great buys! I totally agree with you about the Dubrovnik sets (and even the cheap plastic version of this set plays extremely well).

In regards to finials......if the finial is not glued in and you would like to have interchangeable ones, just use a piece of teflon tape. Teflon tape is what they use or used to use on plumbing. It stays flexible and can stretch for any tight fit. It is the best thing I know of or have come across for finials. Will hold them tight but easily removable if you need to.

Try mine. Made from Sapodilla wood. King 3.8". Set comes with 2 Queens. Brand new.

There say you can tell a person by the books in his room ?
So no book's in a room is like a room without a soul !
So why have book's when there collected dust !
Thanks cgrau for posting pics of your set. Beautiful! The king height is clear. Thanks.
loubalch: For my set, with the wide bases throughout all the pieces, yes - the 2.25" works much better. The smaller board made the pieces look cramped.
