My rating in standard game (15/10) is 950+, I cant break 1,000 consistantly. What book would be good for me?

Chernev's "Logical chess move by move" is a pretty good start.

The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played by Chernev is the book that helped me the most when I was starting out in tournament chess. You can absorb a lot playing through all the games.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess.

No, I'm serious. I read the whole book cover to cover and found it very helpful. There are hundreds of exercises, and Wolff's prose is very readable.

Also, and I can't recommend it strongly enough: Chess Tactics for Students, by John Bain.

books are not as useful as playing play, lose, know why you lose then play again.

Buy or borrow Chess Fundamentals by Jose Raul Capablanca. This classic book is best for you. P.S. buy algebraic edition not old descriptive notation.

I, in the other hand, don't see a problem on being shorter than my wife.
