Good night. I am trying to search the chess set used in the Interzonal of Stockholm in 1962. But I have a problem. I can't find any picture in the net about this Interzonal. Have you ever seen a photo of this tournement? Do you know what chess set used the players in their matches in Stockholm?

Thank you very much!

This might be, what you were looking for !? -- 'Fischer', certainly, looks to be, about the same age, {19}, as he was, during, the '1962' Stockholm, Interzonal .. Plus, I found this 'pic' under, "Google-Sweden"/ 'Stockholm', 'Bobby Fischer' {!} ..

More specifically, under, 'images'.. translated, 'bilder'; On the aforementioned, page.

A photo from Stockholm from getty:

The chess set is almost impossible to distinguish. Does anyone have an idea?

There was a Swedish chess magazine (1962) from Stockholm that dedicated almost a whole number to the championship, the 5th interzonal or "Interzonalturneringen".

I was able to get it, but it is really hard to see the chess set.

Even I could not say if it is the same that we can see in the previous image:

A small set, with pawns with wide bases... not sure at all, maybe some short of "Svensk tävlingsmodell" or maybe the fide staunton... nearly impossible to distinguish

At first glance it looks like a magnetic drueke...

Here, a modern one with bigger margins

Ganz, you are very good detective: magazine, picture... Bravo! It's probably!

i think that it's very strange, or impossible, that FIDE or sweden federation has not picture from the match Pomar-Fischer in the Interzonal 1962 in Stockholm. I will try to find it.

thanks to all the participants in this mission!

A 'link' to, the 'late' 'Spanish' GM, "Arturo Pomar".. supposedly playing, against, 'Robt. Fischer', in, 'Stockholm', 1962. .. {since, it's a 'Spanish language article - The name/ city, of 'Stockholm', is written, in its' semi-unrecognizable, 'Spanish' translation, form, I think.

{by-the-way.. I found this, under, "Arturo Pomar"/ Google, images, {'page'}.

I'm fairly sure the set used for the Stockholm Interzonal 1962 is the one pictured on the dust cover of Eero Böök's book about the Swedish grandmaster Gösta Stoltz below. The set was used in a number of tournaments in the 1960s, not only the Interzonal in 1962, but also in a series of Christmas/New Year tournaments in Stockholm. However, the sets seem to have disappeared towards the end of the 1960s, and as far as I know they were never seen used in the Swedish Championships (which would be another fitting occasion for such a set, I would have thought). Funnily enough, although I'm from Sweden myself and have played chess since the late 1970s, I've never seen this set in its entirety. I've only ever seen individual pieces mixed up with the Swedish competition model, in its various iterations, as pictured by ganz_unten above:

.. A picture, I found, on "Google-Russia"-images, under, "Victor Korchnoi" .. that, though written in Russian, {naturally}, Still wasn't clear, as to what tourney, or event, the following picture, was taken !?

- He looks young enough though ; And, comparable, to the above, 'Stockholm' '62, image !

That's a Soviet set, the same model was used in a number of World Championship matches from Botvinnik v Bronstein 1951 onwards.

Another strange thing about the Stockholm 1962 interzonal is that no proper tournament book was ever produced. The Swedish grandmaster Gideon Ståhlberg covered the Saltsjöbaden (just outside Stockholm) and Gothenburg interzonals in 1948, 1952, and 1955 in fine hardcover volumes (a series which also included the Candidates tournaments in Budapest 1950 and Zürich-Neuhasen 1953, and the World Championship matches in 1951 and 1954). A book on the 1962 interzonal was planned by a Swedish chess journalist, but it resulted in nothing but a slim booklet with the game scores and a tournament table.
