The queen looks a bit too much like a slightly taller pawn and needs more articulation to distinguish it. The knights are impressive, though.

Magnifique!
And that board, what a board to go with that incredible set.
I agree with @TheJackalC4 above who states “stunningly beautiful”. It truly is.

Happy that some share my feelings.
63mm square / chessboard : 56cm x 56cm
(the perfect chessboard size i was looking for to re "make" a new chess table with an old one)
Bonjour,
The knigt is perfect and very accurate (if you like the 1849 style)
The box an board are formidables.
but for me the true perfection would be a good repro of the Anderssen 3 ½’ set.
I have the dunoon which is not too far, but too big and heavy for me.
In addition the base is slightly undercut and I don't like that.
What could also be improved in mostly repro I can see (but not too much in yours) is the pawn with the head in the shoulders.
But I'm too punctilius, this set is fantastic.
What do you think of the dunoon ?

Bonjour,
Allez!Faisons nous plaisir... ![]()
...) :
I readily admit to having succumbed immediately to the perfection of this knight ... and do not begrudge me but, to my eyes, no replica, to this day, equal the precision of this knight ... I dreamed of this :

)
and I'm pretty much satisfied with my reproduction ... (and £ 12000 saved
)
Regarding your set, I find it really nice to watch, mainly the cavalier who is, for me, much more beautiful than an "Andersen"!
Maybe you would like this knight here: (Please: forget the absence of cleaning ...)

... à suivre / to follow
...suite
I do not think at all that you are picky, you are just demanding and you know what you like, or not.
I am completely of your opinion about the heads of the pawns, but I admit to agree with this opinion:

on the "Jaques" that I was able to acquire because of its size and some discreet "repairs", looking very closely, we can see that the heads of the pawns, the tips of the bishop, and the crown of the queen, are the weak points of these little wonders ...
To have taken this into account does not seem to me devoid of common sense ... but I join you that a pawn head perfectly round and gently maintained, is an undeniable beauty!
Thanks for your comment
Merci pour votre commentaire.
The 1849 set is undoubtedly very impressive. I think the knight may resemble a later knight, however. IMO the best reproduction of the the 1849 knight was the HOS New Cooke knight, although this set was only 3 1/2" and nowhere near as impressive as the 1849 behemoth! You can clearly see the similarity of the HOS knight to set #628 as shown in the last pic. Not sure if 1849 was based on a specific set or not (J. Jaques #8 and #9 being the obvious candidates). Would be interested in seeing a pic of the original set if it was a copy of an old Jaques. Lovely set either way.

Stunningly beautiful!
