Thanks! It was just one of situations. I was just window shopping to see what was available and poof there it was. He had a 3.5" version available which I prefer more, but the condition was not as nice as this one. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one.

Haha! Just one Lardy and one Chavet #5 or #6 with a Chavet Chess or Henri Chavet box.

A few posts above there is a Lardy box, turned upside down, and on the bottom is a red label with some numbers on. Q. Is it a date in a format that the French use ?  I have similar on my early 1980 s Lardy box (my label is white ) and I've been trying to confirm what it is. My lardy is large and Very chunky / fat pieces. Don't think it's weighted, and some of the black pieces have quite a curve. It's a far set and has been with me since 1985. I think it came from Jenners in Edinburgh.   Many thanks to all you Lard y experts. I've really enjoyed reading the posts.  must dash,, off to a tournament at 10am

I am no expert either and was wondering the same thing. I only found this thread. Check out post #9. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/lardy-set-date-of-manufacture

The first 8 is unknown. The 2nd 8 is the size. CH is the beech box.

Super nice set MCH! You scored, but by now you know that.

I bought my Lardy set in NYC,in the mid 1970's.....I still remember paying a staggering $15.00 for it,incl that nice wood box.-happy.png

It's in the exact same shape as it was when new, because I had it in a closed end table for years, until getting the chess bug back a few years ago.Now it has quite a bit of company, with my other sets.......None fifteen bucks.

@MCH818 Nice pickup. I had that set in my Favorites List. Hah!

I would've pulled the trigger if I didn't already have a 4" Lardy set. I don't recall that Knight damage being disclosed in the description. I will make a mental note of this Etsy seller as being "loose" with his descriptions. Did you contact RestorationRetro to see what they had to say? Partial refund maybe?

Mch  818 ,   thank you so much for that intel. I did have a read. There must be a French man out there who knows the facts 😀. I'll have another look at my own lardy label. I wonder where the lardy  factory was !!  If I knew I would pop in and meet the locals 😋🌞😋🌞😋🐸

My offer of $30 still stands. You can double your money!

I guess great minds think alike. No I did not contact them. I was happy with the set. I guess it was due to my own expectation. If this was a new set from HoS, CB, etc then the condition I received would not be acceptable, but this is a 50 year old set.

I did ask questions about condition such as loose weights and cracks before the purchase. They assured me there were no issues. However, I know these old sets have issues. I remember the Chavet set that went on eBay back in July 2020 which sold for around 550 Euro had a crack in the knight and @Ronbo710 made a comment about hairlines should be expected. I also know not every seller will look for these things like us. I assumed there will be cracks, dings, and condition issues not reported or shown in photos. I felt like I received a set in better condition than I expected. I think that was why I was not disappointed when I noticed the issues.

Welcome! I scoured the Internet last night but was not able to find anything other that the thread I mentioned. I believe the first number could be the finish. I could be wrong though.

This is a very strange chat up line for your wife ? aren't jedi single surprise.png

In the Jedi Order, during the Rise of the Empire Era attachment and possession were forbidden, because they could lead to jealousy and fear of loss, and ultimately the dark side of the Force. For that reason, Jedi were not allowed to marry

I love English/Jaques-style sets the most. Then, Soviet and Eastern European sets.
But for everyday play, nothing beats a Lardy-style set! The pieces feel so right in my hand. Besides, they’re very attractive sets as well.
Unfortunately, I’ve never owned an set actually made by Lardy. I had a beautiful (and inexpensive) boxwood set from USCF Sales that I’ve since lost. I now have a Lardy reproduction from HoS, and a few other French “club” sets. I just adore them!
