@WandelKoningin Good question. My two cents is that these reproductions didn’t sell as expected. I love the Petrópolis 1973 set, but the pieces from the 1979 tournament lack the same level of craftsmanship. If you look at the Knights, for example, you can see how they were streamlined compared to the original models from the mid 1960s (left in the image below, and probably based on a classic Staunton as seen in the top left of the image) in the early 1970s (in the middle) but then lost all details and became something else in the models used in the late 1970s (right). But, it is fair to say the late 1970s’ pieces are quite charming and many people love them for that.

I can imagine it wouldn’t be a hugely popular design, but I don’t see why you would remove it from your catalog. I guess it’s a risk to have the artisans produce a particular design sporadically; better to keep them with the muscle memory to produce a design with consistent results.
But yeah, those older sets are much nicer! That cross in the body of the 1979 set is a compelling idiosyncrasy, but other than that, the 1973 design may have had greater appeal as a reproduction. But I guess the interest in these sets just isn’t great enough.
