Really nice and unique looking set. Nothing wrong with the Knights. I like them, in this particular designed set. Totally cool.
American Chess Company set from Royal Chess Mall
Really nice and unique looking set. Nothing wrong with the Knights. I like them, in this particular designed set. Totally cool.
Right magic, nothing wrong with the knights at all. They were humorous to me when I first saw them last year, and though not seen very often, I recall smiling every time we crossed paths. I have a similar reaction to some of the modern Knubbel repros that bear a facial resemblance. During my hunt for a crimson set, those Knubbel repos were a strong candidate. Ultimately, I went with this set to satisfy my Llama fixation (also more playable sizing than the Knubbel) and went with the Reykjavik crimson set to make me "♫ think all ♫ the world's a sunny ♫ day ♫ oh yeah ♫".
An excellent choice Yenster1 and I wasn't aware until a few months ago that RCM had offered this particular reproduction. https://royalchessmall.com/products/1900s-american-chess-company-reproduction-chess-set-chess-pieces-only-ebony-boxwood-3-9-king
Your image of the ebony Queen exhibits the fine craftmanship these Indian turners have.
I wonder if these are the same people turning these for Chess Bazaar?
Thanks @alleenkatze, these ebony pieces are indeed very well crafted. Ebony is definitely more difficult to photograph, which may be the cause of fewer photos shown (at least by me in this thread). Maybe I'll challenge myself to add more ebony pics.
Regarding the source of the pieces, I have noticed some chess vendors are within 100 yards from each other in India. Though it looks like CB is about 100 miles from RCM, it's entirely possible that these sets are manufactured by the same factory. There are even some American and Canadian companies that will ship some sets directly from those same Indian sources, so, who really can say.
Very nice! Indeed, the knights grow on you after a bit - especially seeing them in context with the rest of the set. Really nice proportions alongside the rooks & bishops, IMO.
Speaking of the bishops - I really like them. I'd like my next set to have bishops along these lines - with more 'bulbous' heads, and thin miters... I've always found them appealing.
Thanks for sharing!
Well, I've read some discussions on whether these are Llamas or rabbits, or could even be laughing horses, but whatever your impression, my first thoughts were Llamas, and happy ones at that...probably what draws me to this set most.
I've got a small home party/gig this Saturday (yeah, for real, the band actually got back together) and I'm anticipating some entertaining reactions to my new Llamas. Can't wait
