Completed the set I traded at the local chess club.

That's a nice dogface set mister! It's around 92mm I think? Looks in really nice condition, no leaners. Congratz!

KH is 90mm with 36mm base. Has an overall nice patina. Now looking for a folding board with storage to go with it.

I like your style mister! Yes an old worn out folding board with storage is the way to go for such vintage set happy.png

Oh btw, mine came with leather felts. Somehow that gives extra vibes to an old set. Maybe an idea for you 😉

Here's the Drueke 62 with an SC Cooke Morphy set. King barely fits on the 1 3/4" squares, but I don't think I mind.

Aside from the normal wear and tear, a couple manufacturing defects: squares aren't all perfectly aligned, and it looks like a belt sander got away from whomever was doing that work. I can see some marks, and it's not quite flat in one corner of the board.

Anyone know what wood the light squares are? Birch? Doesn't look like maple to me.

I am glad you like your new vintage board. The patina is very nice. You just can't get that reddish ton without decades of usage. Based upon the label I would say the light squares are birch. I don't know when they started using maple for the white squares. I believe aspen was used with the boards that have the gold Drueke letters as the logo.

The SC Morphy is definitely too big for your Drueke. I tried mine on my 1.75" board as well.

I normally use mine on a 2.25 in which has the opposite effect.

I know it's tight, but I'm gonna keep using it. I made a mahogany and maple board with 54 mm squares to use for this set, but I'm gifting that to my brother in law.

Here are some "Baku" pieces on the Drueke 62. The king has maybe 1-2 mm more breathing room, but more crowded feel overall.

But I really kind of like crowds boards. The Baku was my first set and it came with a board with 45 mm squares. The Drueke is roughly 44 mm.

I'll eventually just have to make another board, but it takes so long with hand tools only...

MCH818

Your Baku set looks good on the Drueke. The white pieces match the walnut squares and border well. I think it is a little tight for me but that's how Soviet sets are... nice and cozy.

mikejungle

Thanks!

I love how the folding board that came with the Baku looks, but I hated how it sounded...maybe that's a dumb reason. It vibes hard, but not as fun to move pieces on when I'm studying stuff.

So this will be nice.

Yeah I know what you mean about the sound on that board. I'm thinking to fill it up to make the sound more solid but than I'd loose the storage facility. Not sure yet what to do.

mikejungle

Custom wooden inserts that fit exactly in the storage space. Attached with double sided tape. Haha. Completely loses the practicality of the storage space, but it's not a permanent modification, at least.

I seriously thought about doing this for the folding board.

MCH818

@Mikejungle No I don't think that a dumb reason. That hallow sound could be annoying.

Powderdigit
I think sound is important- there’s something very pleasing about a nice solid ‘clunk’ on a board. What about cutting acoustic foam to fit inside - it may even be possible to cut slots in the foam to into which you push pieces when storing? Just an idea …

Got this Looping "Chess Champion" clock. It seems to be NOS (New Old Stock) as the certificate of guarantee is blank, there is even still a tag included. It runs soooo smoooooth, nice nice

Very nice rare find / MR TOCM just got a early GARDE waiting for the post man

Here's a photo of my
GARDE wink.png

How can you tell that clock is an early Garde as opposed to a later one? Is it in the GDR label?

The markings on the face changed over time, as well was the wood/stain color used, and the light colored wood stripe point to older generation.  The older Garde clocks are beautiful, although the clock mechanisms and lubricants are aged as well.  Many still run, but if you buy one to use they often are in need of maintenance/cleaning.

Thanks for the info! I always look for the lighter wood ones with the made in GDR on the face. I didn’t realize they made ones like the one @Lighthouse picked up. I really like the color of it.

42mm rollup wooden board with 76mm pieces no idea where it's from. For a few bucks I thought why not.

MCH818

That board matches the Looping clock well.

TheOneCalledMichael

Indeed sad.png I'm not gonna get 55mm board in that wood just for the clock though lol
