so you want to improve. books wont get you very far if you don't

a) analyse all your games with a chess program (preferably)

b) practise hard!(:

c) be mindful of tactics!! (use tactics trainer if you need)

Books is just theory, if you can't put it to play, well, what's the point. Personally, books increased my awareness of the game, gave me a good few opening lines to play, and plus coaching from my school helped me in my positional and tactical play (not to forget chess.com), I got this far.

But though I practise intensely and allow myself to indulge in tactics, I don't analyse my games, so I don't get very far past 1500s. I'm usually hovering around 1350-1450. Sad case. I don't have a chess program, my father wouldn't allow. So I make do and get along with what I have.(:
