This website, http://www.chesscafe.com, has a good selection of books that aren't the mainstream books. Can't hurt to send them an email and someone on the staff may have heard of or remember the book you are talking about...

Carter, i'm sorry i don't know the book you're looking for, but as i see you are new here, i thought i'd mention to you that we have a new site, www.chesskid.com that would also have a lot of great resources for your godson and nephews to start getting into chess. perhaps have a look and let me know what you think?
Years ago, my Dad got me a chess book that was illustrated with medieval characters. It was a beginner book, but excellently done.It was oversized, like a coffee table book, but was great tool. I want to find that book; I think it was written in the 1970's. My godson and nephews are getting into chess, and I think that would be the best book for them
